Between 4.4 million and 6.5 million immigrants illegally in the United States could gain an eventual pathway to citizenship under proposals being discussed by Republicans in the House of Representatives, according to an estimate published Tuesday by the National Foundation for American Policy, a nonpartisan research group in Washington.
The estimate is based on policy ideas that have been put forward by Representative Robert W. Goodlatte of Virginia, a Republican who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Mr. Goodlatte has said he would not support legislation with a special or direct pathway to citizenship for 11.5 million immigrants in the country without legal papers, such as the 13-year pathway in a broad bill the Senate passed last June.
House Republicans have rejected the sweeping approach of that bill and said they would handle immigration in smaller pieces. Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio has said that Mr. Goodlatte is helping him to prepare principles that will guide House action on this issue this year.

It will also be the end of any significant power for the republican party... it will be the party of the wealthy corporatists and the statists... and there are not enough of them to elect a mayor.
Um, Republicans?
How about bringing US jobs back first?
Christian social conservatives NOT WELCOME IN THIS COUNTRY. Deport Catholics back to MEXICO now!
Republicans ideas ping!
Here is a question for your Republican Congresscritter.
Who is going to do all the jobs that Americans won’t do when these people suddenly become Americans?
This is, and has been for a while, a full-on fascist dictatorship with utterly no representation for the American people.
Could legalize up to 6.5 million?
Just who are they kidding here? Is this similar to all Congressional estimates?
I got news for you, if they’re trying to placate people by saying up to 6.5 million could be legalized, then you KNOW the real number of those who will be legalized is more like 25 to 30 million.
Deport illegal alien Catholics back to Mexico now? Sure, but don’t try to claim they’re social conservatives, unless being socially conservative means having very high rates of out-of-wedlock births, breaking the law to come and stay here, and stealing from your neighbor by using the social safety net, aka welfare, designed for actual citizens. Other than that, I’m sure they’re real paragons of virtue and social responsibility...
Let’s see——legalie 6.5 mill.
That means 6,495 Million votes for Democrats——and 5 votes for Republicans (absentee ballots from Mexico).
Let those bastards voting for this crap take those illegals into their homes and support them.
I am tired of paying for those criminals and their multiple kids.
You make an excellent point. The illegals wouldn't be an issue if they were really doing only jobs Americans couldn't or wouldn't do, didn't collect government handouts, they didn't bring crime and they didn't strive to impose their culture on us.
You were kinder than I. Was gonna give em 4.
And this will officially signal the end of the republic.
We had a good run.
Actually it says he doesn’t support citizenship though, please check and see if I misread that.
I still claim Dems wont accept a bill with no citizenship, but desperation can do crazy things.
Progressives will see it was serfdom. they want them voting.
Would Hispanic voters with illegal friends and relatives ever demand that Dems support a legalization bill that has no path if that’s all they can get? There is an interesting question,
The Establishment GOP is taking a very stupid and dangerous path in this issue.
Granting AMNESTY to even one ILLEGAL ALIEN is in fact an assault on the status of UNITED STATES CITIZEN. In essence, AMNESTY would result in cheapening and watering down of something that has held true meaning and value to honest and hard working people for over 200 years.
There is no evidence to support the notion that one who ignores the law by sneaking into our country is going to turn around and be a contributing asset to our society once AMNESTY has been given to them.
In addition, what message is this proposed AMNESTY sending to those who have come to our country in the manner that up to this point has been LEGAL and REQUIRED? Are these new American Citizens dupes and fools for going through the LEGAL process to become Citizens? That certainly seems to be the message that these PRO-AMNESTY people are sending.
Coming to America has been a dream to people across the globe for generations. People have sacrificed so much to achieve the status of Citizen and done so with Pride. This cannot be allowed to change just because some political hack feels like it will enhance their career.
Coming to America is NOT a RIGHT but rather a privilege and should remain so. Too many Men and Women have made the ultimate Sacrifice ensure that America is a shining beacon for those who truly desire to ASSIMILATE and become one of US. The same cannot be said for those who willingly show no respect of our Laws, Traditions and Heritage and demand that they are entitled to all of the rights and privileges that were EARNED by those who Played by the Rules from the beginning.
Of course they won’t try to round up and deport the othe 5 or so million and there will be no further attempt to secure the border. Count on it.
The current crop of the GOPe doesn't care. They think that no matter what happens their Crony Corporate buddies will take care of them and that they will shielded from the social collapse that will be the result of their treachery.
It's worse than that. With chain immigration allowing your 'near' relatives to immigrate after you get in - and then their relatives and then their relatives ad infinitum - it is a mathematical certainty that everyone south of the Rio Grande could qualify to come here. The only thing that would keep them out would be the practical difficulties of crossing the borders of intermediate countries with actual control.
