The elderly man accused of shooting a movie theater patron in Florida after an argument over text messaging told police that he fired because he "was in fear of being attacked."

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference today that the victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was texting his young daughter's babysitter when an argument erupted with Reeves over texting during previews before the movie "Lone Survivor."

“At least one patron is on record saying she didn’t even know of the gunshot(s) or scuffle in the back of the theater.”

That is weird. The scuffle, ok, but a gunshot? I don’t know how you wouldn’t hear that. Was it that the movie sound was so loud? Some of those places it’s just deafening, but still....

"I can't believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie," Cummings said.

I take my gun to Mass, to weddings and today I'm going to visit a friend at the Funeral home and I'll be carrying.

The only one that can't hurt me is the one in the casket.

Never leave home without it.

I have read your responses through 2 threads on the tragic event and I think you should stay out of movie theaters.

Get Netflicks or Xfinity or whatever would allow you to watch movies at home.

You think it is reasonable to shoot a person for texting before a movie even starts. You are a danger to others and you need help.

the “witnesses” in yesterday’s reports didn’t even know who threw the popcorn (although it was in the police report that the shooting victim threw it).

In a case like that, who would you say is right -- the witnesses who were there or the police who weren't???

Is it possible that the bag of popcorn flew out of his hands or his wife's hands at the time of the shot???

Continue your conversation with your partner that you had while the house lights were up and see if the entire audience doesn't glare at you. Go on, try talking at normal voice during the previews and see if others don't think you are ruining their movie experience.

So... the cop making an issue out of someone 'texting' was actually the cause of the disruption for all the moviegoers, and not the texting.

As I said before, If I was sitting in a theater texting, you would have to stand up and look over my shoulders to even notice. You wouldn't 'hear' anything nor would you notice the light from the screen.

I have not seen where the Manager confirms any contact. This EX-PIG went to the car and got the gun, came back and Murdered this Man.

You are uninformed and irresponsibly inserting false information into the story. There is, in fact, a quoted response from the theater manager after Reeves alerted him to the situation. It probably doesn't suit your agenda, yet the information is published and available for those actually seeking the truth.

We’ll have to watch closely. If the shooter walks, we’ll know that an old man requesting us to stop texting is a threat to our very lives, and we can justifiably shoot him.

Correct. The guy doesn’t even have a shift to finish, and he’s still shooting people so he can go home safely.

...a toddler there

I've been corrected. The child was in day care, and the dad was on the phone with the day care at the time.

Dude, you are no longer on the police force. You cannot use that absolving phrase any more.

I’ve sat behind jokers who text throughout the movie.

But this guy was texting during the previews. My experience has been that people are doing all kinds of things during the previews.

Texting.

Making comments about whether they do or don't want to see the movie being previewed.

Making comments about the stupid snack commericals.

Trying to find a seat.

Running back and forth to the Snack Stand.

Quite a bit of activity during the previews, IMHO.

Once we add to the equation the complaint by another moviegoer that this same retired cop had followed her to the bathroom (at a previous show) because he was mad at her for texting leads one to believe this retired cop has nothing to do but attend movies and see if he can exert his 'lost powers' on innocent movie goers.

Hopefully, the movie attendees at the state prison will be respectful and quiet during the previews.

Well, what does that say about public confidence in police officers, if his status as a former one is an automatic strike against his credibility, in so many peoples’ eyes?

Except for the numerous folks who exhibit the opposite kneejerk response and want to give him a medal...I know you were just about to add.

Do you think a man killed, wife shot and a three year old who will never see her father again...over a text...is NOT a strike against their murderer's credibility?

What if Curtis Reeves had been a retired black electrician?

That popcorn may just save the cop.

Throwing the popcorn at the cop could have been the precursor from an attack by the rude moviegoer.

In the movies, sand is often used as well as countless other objects.

Possibly, the local cops are coming out to say what a good guy he is. The cop who arrested him is probably in trouble.

The key is whether a reasonable person would be in fear for their life in that situation. There are many witnesses and the event is pretty well documented.

The fact that he left and went back is also a factor.

I never said the shooting was justified. They were both dumbasses.

There has been ZERO posting from anyone saying that throwing popcorn was unjustified.

I’ve also seen a lot of rumor mongering in defense of the dead guy. Conspiratorial horsesh!t.

Broader question -

What if Curtis Reeves were anything other than a retired cop?

“Best thing was to agree so you diffuse the situation and move yourself to a different location in the theater.”

The word you are looking for is *defuse*, not diffuse.
