WASHINGTON The recent nationwide cold snap isnt just making Americans uncomfortable. Its turning some into lawbreakers.
The shocking news of state and local regulations that make it illegal to warm up your frozen car is hitting home in Texas, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Carolina even some cities in Minnesota.
Who knew it could be illegal to run back inside while your car is warming up in winter in a practice sometimes called puffing?
Many Americans are getting first-hand experience this brutal winter with the latest manifestation of what some call the Nanny State.
The reason for such laws is usually linked with the increased threat of vehicles being stolen and some of them carry hefty fines for enticing car thieves to commit their crimes. The laws are a little fuzzy on the newer technology of auto-start vehicles specifically designed for the comfort of their drivers and passengers.

Wouldn’t that be in AA county, not PG?
I guess the ole saying:
“You can’t step outside your house without breaking the law” rings true.
F**K their silly laws, arrest me!
Reassuring . . . NOT!
Yes, but only to cool down the interior before you drive away.
I never had a problem with this except for one clown in a preious apartment complex who would start his car and then go back inside for about an hour. I hate the noise of an idling engine for extended periods of time.
So, we’re penalizing people for exposing themselves to crime , huh?
Makes so much sense!
Are they actually going to send the police around to check for this? Such idiots we have enacting laws.
Control freaks at ski areas in Soviet Red Hampshire have been doing this for a couple of years...
didn't think you'd mind
Nanny State PING! to reply #41
I just looked up my township to see if there was an ordinance like that on the books. Thank God, there isn’t.
That fluffing
I live in Wisconsin. Radio 1310 WIBA’s traffic watch was advising people to warm up their cars so they won’t wind up like the dozens of disabled cars in -20F conditions. No one threatened radio guy with sanctions.
That day, car #1 blew a coolant hose connector, and car #2 got a flat tire hitting a separated piece of highway due to cold heaves on the interstate. Until the car warmed up the window was icing over . . . ON THE INSIDE!
Cars left running at the gas station do sometimes get stolen. I drive older GM products (mid 90s), and half of the doors/windows/locks don’t work in WARM weather; there is no way I am going to LOCK them in cold weather.
“But, officer, my wife had the car in the scope of her .308 the whole time. See that open widow up there? HEY HONEY, WAVE FOR THE OFFICER! See her up there, sir? I don’t think the thieves represent the threat that you believe.”
Do what?
You would think so and then Polar Vortex hit, blast that Al Gore.
Time to drop a burning tire in the town square.
