Wal-Mart Relies On Taxpayers To Subsidize Low Wages

According to The Huffington Post, Congressional Democrats released a study Thursday that demonstrated how Wal-Mart’s wages are so low that many of its workers must rely on food stamps and other government aid programs, costing taxpayers as much as $900,0000 at just one Wal-Mart Supercenter in Wisconsin.

The report, “The Low-Wage Drag on Our Economy,” was produced by Democrats with the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

There is no bounty system that I can find. Walmart just isn’t set up for it. There is a nice quarterly bonus, however, if the store profits and meets sales expectations.

For starters, peg the minimum wage to inflation.

Minimum-wage laws lock entry-level workers out of the market.

Minimum-wage laws are at their heart a racist union tactic.

The first federal minimum wage law was passed because black workers were underbidding white union workers for jobs.

The year the first federal minimum wage law was passed was the last year that the black unemployment rate was lower than the white unemployment rate.

So which Communist union do you belong to?

The premise of this entire article is completely false. Its assumption is that Walmart, as an employer, must pay its employees enough to cover "a living." They don't define what "a living" is, nor do they account for employees that work part-time by choice, or from those who might be capable of working other part-time jobs to make ends meet.

It's not Walmart's job to ensure all of their employees have every life need cared for. And if Walmart or McDonalds refers their employees to a state agency for additional help, it's not the fault of the corporation.

You're a greedy, evil person, steelhead. You covet what you refuse to earn on your own.

Have you read the FR mission statement lately? The OP comes on here and spouts a bunch of DU/Elizabeth Warren/Occupy socialist talking points, and you’re suddenly captain “real conservative” police, while defending the troll.

You welcome different ideas? Like socialism? Class warfare?

Nonsense. Household wealth and real family income are up dramatically since 1973, just like our GDP and productivity are up dramatically since 1973.

If the fedgov wasn't paying out entitlements, we'd have more people working, and we'd have a larger economy and even greater wealth. Only a blind moron thinks we've lost, or simply maintained, wealth and income since 1973.

Don’t care if it is Walmart Kmart Target McDonalds Burger King etc. Unless you are a Manager, Department Manager etc you will receive miniumum wage because it is a MINIMUM WAGE JOB! These are entry level jobs. Being a cashier is not meant to be a fulltime career living wage job. Bagging fries is not going to buy you a home. Grow up. You want more you have to be more..

The blue line respresent real unemployment, i.e. it counts those in the civilian work force who are unemployed plus those working part time and need full time, plus those conveniently bumped out of the civilian labor force who need and want work:

Keep in mind most new jobs created are part time, low wage, no benefit, no future types.

The minimum wage is not a wage. It’s a regulation. Companies are not obligated to pay it.

Their workers are free to leave and find better paying jobs if they want. What are you suggesting? That WalMart should be forced to give them raises?

Just what is the average “skill-set” of your average Wal-Mart employee?

I’d venture it’s not much and if it’s not much, then the pay shouldn’t be much either.

I don’t like the idea of shopping in Albertson’s here because they, like just about every other grocery chain have unionized employees...the checkout clerks can make as much as $20 or more an hour to do what?

Scan bananas and not know how to make change out from $20.25 for a $13.25 purchase?

The problem here is that there is a move afoot to redefine what an entry level job is and what the pay should be. I worked for $2.85 an hour when I first started working...and I was damned glad to get it.

But as with all things...all one has to do is look at the vocabulary being used today...”deserve”, “entitled”, “worth”, etc....that does a lot to condition the current generation who believe that they are “deserving” and “entitled” to start with middle to high tier wages...

Wal-Mart is paying their people what W-M believes they’re worth...again, skill-set.

Opposition to same-sex “marriage” and glorification of homosexuality as normal. Oppoistion to unrestrained immigration, legal or illegal, and H1B visas that take jobs away from native-born STEM grads (I hate the term STEM but I’ll use it here to save time). Understanding of how God shapes the fate of nations (he destroyed the USSR, and may lay the smack down on the West if we keep going down the wrong moral path).

"Socially" conservative, and economically liberal/leftist then? As for God smacking down the USSR, I will not deign to infer His reasons for bringing the USSR down, but it is rather clear that the collapse of its leftist economy is the mechanism by which He did it. That same leftism is what you are advocating here.

Perhaps you should re-read some of the parables of Jesus that pertain to economic issues. Remember the servants and the talents? Did the Lord take away from the servant with the ten talents and give to the nonproductive servant with only one talent to deal with income inequality? NO. He took the one talent away from the nonproductive servant and gave it to the most productive servant. What about the workers who worked all day for a wage and then were incensed when workers who only worked the last part of the day were given the same wage? Did their wages get bumped up to compensate them for wage inequality? NO. Your leftist politics of envy - in the name of "equality" - is a violation of the Commandment "Thou shalt not covet ... anything that is thy neighbor's" and is not consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

I worked for $2.50/hr. and thought that was fine. But that was back in the 1970s. $2.50 in those days was probably like $10 now, adjusting for inflation. Postscript, I had a summer job in 1979 that payed $4.50/hr. and people thought that was like “wow.” That’s probably close to $20/hr. in 2014 money.
