Original post (December 30) -- Around 9:30 a.m. on December 7, University of Minnesota-Duluth student Alyssa Jo Lommel, 19, was found nearly frozen to death on a neighbor's porch. She'd apparently spent the entire night outside while temperatures dropped as low as 17 below zero.

THE BACKSTORY: UMD student Alyssa Jo Lommel tweeted about tequila shots before she was found freezing

More than three weeks later, Lommel remains hospitalized. Her condition has been upgraded to fair, but according to her family, doctors still haven't told her how bad her injuries are.

Her doctor "felt that today it would be good to just tell her about the amputations,"

The doctor "also told her how lucky she was just to be alive, but I really don't think any of that sunk in," Teri Lommel continued. "It took her several minutes before she looked at any of us. Then she started to slowly cry."

I think it should have said...

“Compassion on an internet forum thread totally unrelated to the person who is being compassioned for is kind of irrelevant”

And assuming those who crack a joke or make a statement or even point out the obvious are not “compassionate” is just a form of political correctness.

such as leaping to conclusions like this fictional exchange:

-She got drunk and this happened, not a shock

“You, sir scoundrel, have NO COMPASSION! You should be ashamed of yourself!”

As if the second poster has any idea how much compassion has or hasn’t got for the person in the story.

Teens with moderate drinking parents who drink in celebration and have been taught at home to drink responsibly drink the least and have the least problems with alcohol.

Ditto.

We need to get rid of our drinking age laws.

Then a kid will be knowledgeable of the effects of alcohol from a much younger age.

This will reduce the sudden exposure at an age of stupidity.

In Germany, a teenager trying to see how much booze they could drink is about as ridiculous as trying to drink as much milk as possible.

There is no mystique about alcohol like there is here for teenagers.

If teenagers were used to alcohol consumption in moderation, like any other beverage, from a much younger age, crap like this would seldom happen.

“You perhaps are feeling a little Pharisaic? This world groans with grief yet you face it with a cold heart?”

Perhaps his name should be with ‘State’ removed? There is nothing ‘Gay’ about the comment made that you, Darius have replied to.

Is there ever a story about an attractive woman that you don’t condemn her?

“...there is doubtless something stupid lurking in their own life which God can very easily turn into a petard upon which their pride will be hoist.”

Read the book of Esther and ask Haman about that...in his case it was his own petard...

A drunkard one time buddy of mine went out to pee on a bush. About a half an hour later we noticed and want to find him. He was still in his peeing position, but had leaned forward on to the bush and passed out. Fortunately his hand kept his, er, “extremity” from freezing.

Ummm, Mr. Edd,

You’re probably posting from a comfortable location in a comfortable house.

I know I’ve knocked it into my kid’s head verbally over and over and over.

Do you have children, especially of the teenage/college years?

Even when it’s 0 outside, it’s hard to get them to take their hat and gloves. We live here. Heck, I shoveled the deck and fed the birds at -10. You get used to it and take a lot of breaks inside.

The local lake is full of icehouses and vehicles.

You are right about nature having no compassion.

I’m all for common sense.

I just remember my teenage years when that was lacking. but for the Grace of God I am still here today with all my digits.

You try your best to instill that respect for the weather when you are a parent.

My kid has to text me when he arrives at his destination.

It’s worked so far. When he’s in college, probably not so much.

Dang. GeronL. To her, your anonymous post on an internet forum has no affect. However since we all share this feeble brotherhood, and sisterhood of life on earth forums like this serve to frame thought and discussions on other events. The waves like throwing a rock on smooth pond. Who knows where that ripple will go.

The health and happiness of your soul and the completeness of yourself vote for simple compassion in the face of the horrors we all face as mortals. I don’t know this poor girl. She isn’t much older than my daughter. I feel sad for her. It makes no difference to her. But it makes my soul feel human to share in her grief.

I suppose I should temper or discipline my soul to only consider and act with ruthless logic. But I don’t want to do that. I want to live, and to feel, learn, repent. Until I can no longer.

But go ahead be who you are.

The reality is that it is MORE painful to experience consequences of our own foolishness than those that are purely accidental because we have to live with regret and guilt on top of the painful experience.

Sometimes people deserve horrible things to happen to them. Sometimes even worse than what does happen. That might be the case here. On the other hand, compassion is a positive, godly quality that is desperately needed in the world. It costs you nothing. And you may find yourself in need of it some day yourself.

Compassion is irrelevant.

No it's not. We can express compassion for the sorry fate of this young woman, while simultaneously acknowledging the stupidity of hers and others actions that night.

A little compassion doesn't cost any of us a single thing. I look at what's happened to her and think back to all of the things I've done that could have put me in a similar or worse condition.

"There, but for the grace of God..."

I have no stones to cast.

>> Compassion is irrelevant.

It’s certainly relevant to the individual thinking it’s being denied.

I’m as compassionate as anyone else here, sorry I wore the wrong color ribbon

It wasn't the 'ribbon' that got my attention. It was the heartless words out of your mouth.

You know, your right. I have watched wildebeest graving contently next to one of their own kind getting munched by a herd of lions.

I, you, GeronL, we can be like stupid beasts of the field. Graze away, make your belly fat and your coat glossy while you can.

But our differentiation is we have a soul. So we can warn others and mourn others.

I've looked at different reports on this.

One report said her hands had swelled to three times their normal size, with the skin splitting.

Snow tracks showed she perhaps attempted to get into a car (maybe when she couldn't open the possibly locked house door?). She was found on a neighbors porch, so she might've walked to the wrong house. Too bad her ride didn't/couldn't make sure she got into her (own) house.

The man who dropped her off told police that Lommel had "no more than usual" when it came to drinks that night. "Just like a normal party chick," the report read when talking about the driver's observations. "She wasn't wasted. She could talk. And she wasn't falling-down drunk."

Also, she apparently wasn't wearing a heavy coat or gloves.

So sad. Prayers up for Alyssa.
