Unpleasant video footage of reinstated Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson has emerged in which he appears to advise young men to marry underage girls because they are easier to control.
In the 2009 Sportsmen's Ministry talk, Robertson, 67, who began dating his wife when she was 14-years-old, advises his audience, 'You got to marry these girls when they are 15 or 16. They'll pick your ducks' - which is a literal reference to removing dead bird's feathers.
Warming to his stereotypical redneck theme, Robertson, who was suspended from the A&E hit for nine days earlier this month for homophobic comments, tells the gathered crowd that in addition to being young, the girls have to know how to cook and carry a Bible - 'That'll save you a lot of trouble down the road.'
While the speech given in Georgia is recounted in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner, in light of Robertson's strong views on traditional family values - protected by the First Amendment - they seem slightly inappropriate.
His advice for a happy marriage, which he claims is a kind of 'river rat counseling', is that all men 'Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out.'

Amazing, you just want to make it up, and I don’t know why you keep going on about the census, you don’t know anymore about it than you do about the normal ages for marriage during different eras, and marriage records aren’t based on the census anyway, the census was interviewing people, the marriage records are church and government records, marriages are recorded.
It does seem that you are trying to move to a different argument though, that young marriages like my own and my grandmother’s happen, but that they were not the normal, the average, the routine, which is the myth that you wanted to spread at first.
There is no reason for you to be so dedicated to some simple historical fact reaching freepers.
According to your methods we can figure that homosexuality is the norm, since we all know many, and many have family members who are gay.
We can collect freepers talking about gays they know all day long, and we don’t even have to be talking about someone from a 100 years, like my grandmother.
Seriously, how can anyone get so worked up about what a reality tv star said in an interview? Sheesh, this story needs to just...go away.
My sister got married at 16. Wasn’t pregnant. Her husband was 20. They have been married 41 years. We thought she was crazy but it worked for her.
It is believed Mary was around 14-15 when Jesus was born.
Yeah, but now we have a nation full of independent women, uncared for children, and a devastating divorce rate. But at least now there’s little stigma to acting like a slut which is convenient since the cost / benefit ratio for marriage for most men is way upside down. The cost of “freeing” women has been the destruction of the church and the family. The next step is communist style authoritarian government. It’s like Pandora can’t help herself.
"Oh, duck pickin' woman..."
I've never seen "Duck Dynasty", but darn if Phil isn't keeping me entertained these days! : )
My grandfather married my grandmother in 1914, she was 15 and he was 17. My mother married my father when he was 18 and she was 16. I married my wife when I was 22 and she was 18 and it quite possibly would have been sooner had I not went to Vietnam.
Yep - the natural progression of this demonization of Phil would be to start going after Jeff Foxworthy and company too.
They can't stand a conservative with a sense of humor - it indicates a sense of morality and intelligence which they do not see in their own proponents.
meanwhile in just a few quick sentences, the old guy has been libeled w/o an opportunity to defend himself...one small example is the term 'homophobic'...
i doubt phil fears queers, they are simply disgusting...
...as opposed to impregnating and abandoning them to the inner city, like Obamugabe’s base?
Yeah, I think Phil’s idea is better.
Holly life is still about survival and that will never change. Your example of your depression era parents was definitely not the norm, mine came from the same era and the luxury of an advanced education was out of the question. Food on the table was the #1 priority. In my above post I gave the ages of my grand parents, my mom and dad and myself. My grand parents built a tank building company that covered most of southern New Mexico, my father a construction company that that did well in the Permian Basin of West TX and I myself am in the oil business here in West TX. The only one with a college education is me and that came several years after I was married. You seem to speak from an area that was a rarity from the norm and it makes you some what blind to reality. Had I followed your example of how I should have lived my life, I wouldn’t have three beautiful daughter’s, two grandkids and 42 square miles of ranch for them to enjoy now and in their future.
I remember when people did that. I spent many hours at the end of a strawberry field row playing with the other children as our parents picked strawberries.
“Seriously, how can anyone get so worked up about what a reality tv star said in an interview? Sheesh, this story needs to just...go away.”
Seeing people here defend his crass, absurd comments is what got me worked up.
“Marry ‘em young so you can control them” is hardly the kind of world view I would expect rational people anywhere to support.

If you all think this is what passes for a "fine Christian" man that cherishes liberty, then you have no idea what Christian or American values are. And I'll repeat my earlier point: if such a pervert had ever come around my girls looking to marry them young, said perv would've gotten a boot up his ass! Funny how you all run to support Robertson when Muslims do the same thing and you all howl in outrage!!! You're all a bunch of flaming hypocrites!
Funny how our side has to be perfect for us to agree with them. Did you listen to the rest of that video, it was excellent. You don’t like the marry them young fine, did you have a problem with the Bible part?
You do realize the Marxists are trying to destroy him.
Pray America is Waking
People have elevated this man way beyond his importance to American culture, lol! I’m glad he’s back on the air because I hate political correctness but those fifteen minutes are ticking away.
Today people have the luxury of marrying at an older age. Also the luxury of good healthcare (well, that’ll end soon!) that has increased life expectancy. My husband’s grandmother was married at 15. Times were tough, children were plentiful, and parents needed to get them out of the house! Think of Tevye’s daughters in Fiddler on the Roof!
We were trades men so we can research Town records for indentures of apprenticeship. Men were two to four years older than the women and they were established, Journeymen.
