It's OK to enslave liberals as long as you keep them in your basement.;-)

I recall one of the episodes of DD where Phil is taking the boys fishing and puts “tote sacks” on their heads to hide the location of his fishing hole. He said he had to “Bradshaw” them.

I think this video is from October.

I'm curious to know if Bradshaw supported his old friend recently.

Seriously, in context, since slavery was a fact of life in antiquity, the Bible does address it. It is important to keep in mind that the Old Testament rules are for Jewish (or Hebrew) life in the periods addressed.

I think Exodus has something to say about that... you know: "let my people go", and all that Moses stuff.

The ignorance of today's culture defies belief.

Literally.

Merry Christmas.

My Dad was like Phil Robertson, loved to hunt and fish. It was my job as a kid riding home on the school bus, to scout the ditches and check for ducks. It is my favorite dinner, fillet of Mallard, cooked in mushroom soup with wild rice, green beans with onions.

I love duck (particularly in a Chinese restaurant), but it is difficult to cook (at least it is for me).

I tried to cook it once and absolutely ruined it.

Nobody keeps them very long though because they don’t work and they cry and moan about the food you bring them.

The Bible considers involuntary slavery a capital crime. It allows for voluntary slavery, which was a means of economic survival before the modern welfare state began.

Indentured servitude (Not a lot of bankruptcy laws back in the day so families/individual had to sell-off their hardships) and spoils of war, yes.

Slave trade/buying and selling/breeding of slaves for outright profit, not really. Then there is that whole Jubilee 7th year stuff and responsibilities if the slave is a female.

Involuntary slavery was never tolerated in the OT.

The Bible neither condones nor condemns slavery in general. It was common in the world before the US Civil War. There are Old Testament codes for the fair and proper treatment of slaves, more to prevent mistreatment. There is a New Testament example of a Christian slave being admonished to obey rather than rebel. Enslavement of the Israelites was in some instances condemned.

People who look to the Bible for approval of slavery are mistaken. People who look there for condemnation are, too. It just was. It was a status, like citizen, sometimes viewed as punishment.

It’s neutral. It tells believer slave owners how to treat their slaves. But then, slavery comes in all sorts of flavors. In some cases it was similar to what today we call the employer/employee relationship.

I think most Biblical slavery is "involuntary" though a poor man may sell himself into slavery for a fixed period.

That verse in Exodus 21:16 speaks to the kidnapping or theft of a man's freedom.

Take a look at this (an keep in mind that Leviticus was written after 538 BC--i.e. very old)...

Leviticus 25:44-46
English Standard Version (ESV)

44 As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. 45 You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. 46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.

Here are ALL the verses on slavery in the Bible. LINK to slavery in the Bible.

The Bible doesn't say slavery is ok. It simply acknowledges slavery and how one should treat slaves (with dignity). In the year of Jubilee (every seven years), people were commanded to release their slaves. If the slaves enjoyed working for a particular person, they could ask to stay and they would be servants for life.
