Husband of pregnant woman wants her off life support
CNN Health ^ | December 23, 2013 | Elizabeth Landau

Erick Munoz wants to see his wife's wish fulfilled this holiday season, but it's one that carries ethical and legal challenges: To be taken off of life support. Marlise Munoz, 33, is in serious condition in the intensive care unit at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, hospital officials said. She is unconscious and on a ventilator, her husband told CNN affiliate WFAA, but she wouldn't have wanted her life sustained by a machine. "We talked about it. We're both paramedics," he told WFAA. "We've seen things out in the field. We both knew that we both didn't want to be on life support." Complicating an already difficult situation is that Munoz is also pregnant, about 18 weeks along, WFAA reported. Texas state law prohibits withdrawing or withholding life-sustaining treatment from a pregnant patient, regardless of her wishes.

Here we go again. In these cases I always notice how much attention is given to the unborn child.

What’s wrong with her living another 12 weeks or so, if her condition is stable, being as she’s unconscious anyway? Does he not want the child?

because there’s no abortion doctor that’s going to make any money off it.

You would think this man would want to give his child a chance, if for no other reason than to preserve his wife’s legacy. I know would.

Imagine that. Strangers caring about an entirely innocent life completely at the mercy of a parent who seems to care nothing about it. How horrible for those strangers to care so much for a child not even their own. Shame on them, right? And while they’re at it why do they get all upset about Jews they never knew being gassed in camps or Armenians they would never have met being massacred by Turks? Human life should be cheap and empty, right? Yeah, that keeps things simple.

Bump...It certainly looks like he doesn’t want the child.

... he has reached "the point where you wish that your wife's body would stop."

Before you find yourself a single man with two children under 18 months. I expect he's terrified.

However, a thousand couples would adopt the baby in a heartbeat, if it's healthy, and probably dozens would if there was damage when the mother wasn't breathing.

Explaining that they were both paramedics says a lot.

Those who work around cardiac and stroke patients are often adamant that they do not want more than the basic level of care if they have a heart attack or stroke.

I attribute a lot of it to “false empathy”, in which they see someone in a condition and imagine it to be horrible, no matter what the person actually thinks or feels.

Does he not want the child?

That is the million dollar question.

Yefra, thank you for saying that. I think "false empathy" is a fairly common thing. People see a Downs kid drooling or looking not quite ready to model in an L.L. Bean catalog, and they think, "Oh, the poor child. It's not worth living if you've got a twist in your spine and someone else has to wipe your chin. Poor kid should have never been born."

Or they think that about an old person who needs help with his poop, or a head-trauma patient with challenges to his independent living. And the "empathetic" person starts thinking Belgium is pretty darn compassionate with their euthanasia program.

When actually, the "sufferers" themselves are willing to accept life, even with diminished capacities. Because you can't know what just another day of living means to a person who lives, likes sunlight on his bare shoulder or gets a kick out of strawberry jelly toast, loves his dada, and drools.

The thing is, when she said that did she say it and include even if she were pregnant? Chances are she didn't.

Nope sounds like he does not want the Child.
He will probably become wealthy for killing the Child.
That is the way of this broken world.

Pray for the Child.
Pray for the man’s heart.
He is pretty confused I imagine.

I agree. If she’d been on life support for years, with no sign of improvement, that would be one thing, but we’re talking about less than three months here.

Right. He “found” her under a pillow.

I’m wondering how Terry Schiavo’s husband is doing these days. Anybody know?
