US, Canada Should Merge Into One Country
New York Post ^ | October 26, 2013 | Diane Francis

U-S-Eh! No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as the United States and Canada. We share geography, values and a gigantic border. Regardless of this close friendship, our two countries are on a slow-motion collision course — with each other and with the rest of the world. In 1987, the two countries signed the Free Trade Agreement (Mexico joined in 1994) but the US-Canada border has become more clogged than ever, hurting trade and tourism. There are heavy regulations, security controls and border police, the result of terrorist threats and extensive drug smuggling from Canada that has forced US officials to deploy drones and set up listening posts. Border problems are also due to neglect. Talks to create joint infrastructure have dragged on for years. An initiative announced in 2011 aimed at creating a two-country security perimeter, by blending police, immigration, customs and anti-terrorist efforts, has still not delivered results. While both countries wrestle with internal political challenges, meanwhile, the economies of the larger world change and flourish.

As a Canadian, before this happens, you guys need to restore the original constitution. Having said that, I offer to even come help. I won’t sit by and let you all do the work.

I rather just give Canada everythig north of the Mason Mixon line and east of the Mississippi.

Throw in Kalipornia and you got yourself a deal.

I’ve already stated, restore the original constitution, then we can do this.

Don’t worry, you may soon have a picture of the ‘queen’ (emperor?) of Chicago/DC/Hawaii/Indonesia on your currency, if the Dhimmis have their way!

BTW, Elizabeth II is the Queen of Canada, as well as (no longer) Great Britain, Australia, NZ and other countries.

quebec would go off to la la land (but not be allowed to take the hydro electric plants)

They are there already.

Up until about 1940 the Quebec power grid was not only separate from the rest of the country, but incompatible with it. They really would like to float off into another reality.

Someone mentioned that Canada likes US tourist dollars. Of course. But actually, Canadians spend more on tourism to the US, than Americans spend in Canada. In the winter, its seems that there are quite a few Canadian license plates in Florida and other points south.

No, Null, we will only need to deport them among other lefties. They can all go live in the newly created lala land called “leftist utopia”. There they can all live in peaceful homosexual bliss, and never have to see another gun in their lifetimes. Also, they can all have everything for free, it’ll be heaven on earth for them.

We can only retain those that enjoy freedom and will work hard to keep it.

We’d have to become a bilingual country. Of course, we could always exclude Quebec.

Canada is more European in outlook than America and they have socialists. I’m not thrilled with adding several million left-leaning voters to our electorate.

Thanks but no thanks.

Canada has the same rights to bear arms, they just passed unlawful laws in the recent decades. Time to reverse them.

Most of Canada’s population is along its border with the US. They obviously want to be part of our great nation!

Either that or they’re just snuggling up for warmth. :)

Canadian identity is based primarily on their devotion to the notion that they are NOT AMERICANS.

So is a lot of their economy. Would Hollywood actually shoot movies in Vancouver or Toronto or Montreal if they weren't foreign cities with a currency that (for a while at least) was cheaper than the US dollar? Would Canadian actors get so much work if Canada didn't have protectionist "Canadian content" laws?

To be sure, show biz may not be a major part of the economy, but it's something we're familiar with. I suspect you've got a lot of young people all across the country who think they could make it in Toronto or Winnipeg. Toss millions of Americans into the competitive mix and things get complicated.

Cascasdia. Also, include parts of BC in the union, but NOT the ‘mainland’, leave Vancouver to stew in its own leftist juices.

Not if we have to take the Québécois with the rest of Canada.

Maybe we could trade Quebec off to the French?

Absolutely true.

But we LIKE Canadians generally. I wouldn't dream of telling a carload of snow refugees that I think their obsession with defining themselves as not-Americans is lame, but they don't have any problem telling me how horrible my country is, even as in open my wallet in their country. Which is why my wallet is not going north anymore.
