U-S-Eh! No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as the United States and Canada. We share geography, values and a gigantic border. Regardless of this close friendship, our two countries are on a slow-motion collision course with each other and with the rest of the world. In 1987, the two countries signed the Free Trade Agreement (Mexico joined in 1994) but the US-Canada border has become more clogged than ever, hurting trade and tourism. There are heavy regulations, security controls and border police, the result of terrorist threats and extensive drug smuggling from Canada that has forced US officials to deploy drones and set up listening posts. Border problems are also due to neglect. Talks to create joint infrastructure have dragged on for years. An initiative announced in 2011 aimed at creating a two-country security perimeter, by blending police, immigration, customs and anti-terrorist efforts, has still not delivered results. While both countries wrestle with internal political challenges, meanwhile, the economies of the larger world change and flourish.

As New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were two of the original four Provinces (along with Ontario and Quebec) that formed the new country of Canada on July 1, 1867 and Prince Edward Island joined in 1873, it is news to ALL Canadians that the '...Canadian Maritimes wanted to join the United States in the late 1940s...'. In 1949, Newfoundland became Canada's 10th Province, a fact that many old-timers still despise!
During WWII, thousands of US military were stationed in NF and Labrador, 'wow'ing many of the local girls. As this brought so much money to a resouce-based economy, badly hurt by the Depression, there was some sentiment in NF to form an economic union with the US.
A referendum was held after WWII, and the Dominion of Newfoundland voted slightly more in favour of regaining 'Dominion' status over joining Canada. In a second referendum in 1948, 52% voted to join Confederation. On March 23, 1949, it took effect.
Before you start calling others 'fool', you would be wise to get YOUR facts straight!
No we don't. We have the Queen of Canada on our currency.
The Kings and Queens of Canada: The Crown in Canadian History
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that in an insulting way. Canadians have proven their toughness many times over. What I was getting at was that you don’t spend money on defense like we do (money we don’t have, BTW) and you have an awful lot of territory to defend, much of it very sparsely populated.
Absolutely disagree 100%. BS idea from some morality challenged left wing son of a bitch. I lived and worked in Canada for nearly one year. Absolutely no desire to return and I live 180 miles south of their putrid border.
Throw in so good cold Canadian Brewskis and I’ll help you shovel snow!
Hope you have a great Christmas and New Year too.....
No thanks. I might have thought it a good idea when I first came to the US 18 years ago, but this is no longer the same country it was. I have no plans to lose my Canadian citizenship in case I need a place to escape to. And anyone that wants to flame me for that can go pound sand. I came here legally, spent 10 years getting my green card, paid my taxes and had a son in the military.
I’m just really sad to see what has become of the once greatest country on earth.
And you don't want to have to deal with their f'n draconian gun laws...............
Hamilton had the same problem when we bought looseeanna.
first they have to dump the French and we have to dump Obama,Reid, and Pelosi, then, maybe we can start negotiating.
Canadian identity? What exactly is that???
My step-mother (now deceased) and two step-sisters are American naturalized citizens and to them there is no loss of "Identity"........They're no less or more Canadian now than when they came to the states back in the '60's.
I’d welcome Alberta and Saskatchewan but the rest of it is like blue stae USA. We have too much socialism already.
Do they even like us?
Hey I’d welcome the Sasketchewan Roughriders to the NFL.
...and you need to get over it.
Aren’t you concerned about losing our Constitution?
We’re Americans. Think OPPORTUNITY!
1) TURN Quebec into a french speaking country-the LARGEST in the world.
2) Turn the nation of Haiti into a U.S protectorate. Turn it into a penal colony for 3million U.S. convicts. One million Haitians can move to Quebec and the rest distributed to the French speaking nations around the world-which includes U.S.(New Orleans+ DEtwah. Turn Hispanola over to the Dominican Republic in 50 years-long enough for the U.S. convicts to die off(vasectomy provided by U.S. taxpayer).
Yeah, NOW, while Quebec is part of Canada, it's "just one area" of Canada, but just wait. It will turn out to be just like Spanish, all over.
But the fact of the matter is that there isn't any compelling reason to unite the two countries. There is perhaps more reason to divide both Canada and the US into four or more countries. I'm thinking more like six or seven.
But, in truth, that's a pipe dream, too.
