From Neil's classic After The Goldrush album, "Don't Let It Bring You Down" is hardly a rarity, but his funny self-deprecating comments at the beginning of the live version from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Four-Way Street album is priceless.

Here's another of those songs where I can't decide which version I like better. Had Paul not flubbed the lyrics on the last verse of this out-take it may well have been the "in the can" master. The alternate backing vocals from John and George are a gas.

This song proves the rule that, "a song is never finished, only abandoned." This time we have two Demos of music that evolved into the song "Mean Streets". Van Halen recorded their first demo tape in 1975 at the now-defunct Cherokee Studios in Northridge where Steely Dan had recently completed an album. They we working at The Whiskey A-Go-Go on Sunset Strip and the song "Voodoo Queen" with David Lee Roth's lyrics was one of their set staples. By the time they recorded the Gene Simmon's Demo, the song had evolved into "House of Pain". The song didn't reappear again until it kicked off their fourth album, 1981's Fair Warning as "Mean Streets", again with all new lyrics and a manic guitar intro that became a Van Halen trademark for as long as Roth remained in the band. The song was retired in the "Van Hagar" era, but in 1998 for the VH3 world tour, much to the delight of old school =VH= fans, front man Gary Cherone made the song his own (with a little help from Ed, Al and Mikey).
