South Africa's deaf federation has confirmed that an interpreter using sign language during the Mandela memorial was a "fake".
Concerns over the male interpreter had been raised by deaf people watching the service at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
Bruno Druchen, national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa, said the unidentified man who was on stage alongise world leaders including US President Barack Obama, "was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for".

The rebuttal will be that he was signing in Swahili.
Boy, that’s great security.
He said “for my president” three different ways. LOL
I don’t think he was an interpreter.
He was a fly swatter.
0bama was in the vicinity.
President Selfie!
It probably made more sense than what the rest of the people were hearing — especially coming out of the mouth of Owonderful.
Two Fakes
I Thought take the guy moving his hands around and not saying anything was ‘Bammy’?

Yeah, but I can think of some hand gestures I’d like use around Dear Leader that are pretty universal....
Obama must have volunteered him.
OMG - Even the sign language is FAKE!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Oh Come ON!
Don’t you recognize Bantu sign language when you see it?/S
He was signing in Austrian?
You would have an interpreter that understood that SPOKEN language and Re-interpreted into UNIVERSAL SIGN Language and everyone who KNEW the Universal Sign Language, no matter what SPOKEN language they used, would understand it. I know it’s a little deep....sorry.
Bantu was one of the planets Mungo Baobab visited on his journeys across the galaxy. It was located in the Emmo sector.
The planet was popular for its rainbow sunsets. Somewhere near Bantu, Ebenn Q3 Baobab left the merchant fleet, only to be apprehended and imprisoned by the Moras. After being forced into serving in the Mora Infantry, Ebenn somehow wound up in the “employ” of the Hutts, who enlisted him in the Koong Wars for their own designs.

Where’s Garrett Morris when we need him?
Yep, the new Latin, and you wouldn't have to learn the verbal nuances.
The problem is that it would be a different language with its own set of grammar, colloquialisms, etc. That would mean that hearing parents would have to learn a different language, not just apply sign, to speak to their deaf children. Most hearing people talk at the same time they sign, which obviously wouldn't work. Also the deaf would be forced to learn two languages just to get by. Remember that using a language is a lot more complicated than just memorizing a list of nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
I think the net result would be more internationally astute deaf people, but far, far fewer people using sign.
