The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says it will work to change its strategic plan to ensure the safety of the U.S.s growing population of older drivers and passengers.
In a statement released earlier this week, the NHTSA says its changes are the result of the growing population of elderly drivers. The agency says it will make a number of changes, including researching a number of advanced vehicle technologies including vehicle-to-vehicle communications, refining its data collection systems, and shifting its focus to efforts on public education and identifying functional changes including vision, strength, flexibility and cognition.
NHTSAs Older Driver Highway Safety Program Guidelines are based on best practices around the country and include countermeasures that can be implemented to ensure the safety of older drivers, including at-risk drivers, the agency said in a statement. The guidelines encourage state highway safety offices to work closely with driver license officials, state departments of transportation, medical providers and aging services providers, among others.
The agency was careful to note that the changes are not the result of any changes in how the elderly are driving, but rather the result of a changing environment and a better, more complete understanding of safety practices.
Although older drivers are some of the safest drivers on our roads, our plan builds upon the NHTSAs current work to help older people drive as safely and as long as possible, said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland.

Missed it. What did Oprah say?
It was necessary to keep insurance on his car. He was not driving it but he did not want to give it up. We would just drive him in his car since he still felt like he was the boss in his car.
However illegal aliens who cannot read the warning signs are OK for getting licenses.”
“Of course I saw the sign at that intersection officer but I don’t speak or read English so I don’t know what it says.”
Hundreds of thousands of perfectly good used cars intentionally destroyed.
Why?
Who benefited?
Only those who could already afford a new car, played with that program.
People like me, who can't, were set back several rungs on the ladder...
All those decent used cars were destroyed, and an ever growing number of us still can't afford new car payments.
Do I detest the feds?
Well yeah, but I have for several decades.
But I guess stating that out loud online will put me on yet another government watch list.
Off to the camps for me!
Driver licenses are not properly a federAl matter to begin with.
Obummer can`t get a NY state driver`s license coz he can`t provide the necessary documents plus he has an illegal change of name which is a post-9-11 NY NO-NO-.
When the feds established the stds for commercial vehicle licenses back in 86, they pretty much set a precedent for federal control of licensing.
Just thinking that the over 65 folks voted 56 % against Obama.
yes this is how the federal govt keeps growing and growing and growing and growing and growing and growing and growing and growing and growing and growing....etc.
I believe this is the mindset of the current administration and their supporters.
And if that were true, she wouldn’t have had an audience large enough stay on the air all those years, let alone become rich. Good thing she kept her trap shut then.
I am in NW PA and we get lake effect snow... EVERY NIGHT. Every truck I see, especially the ones from NYS (15 minutes away) are cancered. I recall everyone around the Barre, Vermont area when I was there had Subarus.
I almost am considering a used plastic Saturn Vue... but I really want a truck... saw a 2004 F250 like I would want (extended cab, bench seat, standard trans), but it is a 2004 Powerstoke timebomb waiting to happen.
The old man in NJ has a 2007 Ram 1500 with a 5.9 liter Cummins... it is a driveway decoration... he retired and wanted a toy... He tells me that it is appraised street value today is $35,000... when it cost him 33k new. Go figure.
Nice of you to waste all that money to pander to his ego.
Meanwhile, he can still legally drive.
And probably, one day when you least expect it, he will.
Or do you hide the keys? If you hid the keys, couldn't you have hid the notice?
Because I live and drive daily in Florida.
It's a special kind of drivers hell here, between dealing with elderly snowbirds, foreign tourists, and our very own youngsters all on the roads at the same time.
I don't mean to pick on you personally, for fraudulently enabling an unqualified person who you knew should not have had his drivers license renewed.
You are not alone.
Lots of people do the same thing.
It is still wrong, and may God have mercy on your soul if your father takes to the roads and kills someone.
>>Remember those little black data collection boxes all cars must be equipped with soon?
<<
The ones that LIVs voluntarily put in their cars for a few bucks less insurance?
The ones that will spawn the biggest cottage underground industry ever bypassing them?
“There must be a self-enriching reason and I haven’t figured out what it is yet.”
Betcha that older folks tend to vote conservative. After all, they’ve lived a long time and learned a lot. Fool me once and all that..
About 3:20 into this video is when she says it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK8Eb4oV1CI . If this link doesn’t work for you, just search YouTube or some other video forum for (oprah they just have to die). You need to see it and hear it in her own voice. It’s more than just the words. It’s the anger and hatred in her voice when she says “and they just have to die.”
Thanks so much for the link, I’ll bookmark it for later. Gotta go take some aspirin.LOL
This is a state issue and the feds have no business being involved in state DL’s.
