The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says it will work to change its strategic plan to ensure the safety of the U.S.s growing population of older drivers and passengers.
In a statement released earlier this week, the NHTSA says its changes are the result of the growing population of elderly drivers. The agency says it will make a number of changes, including researching a number of advanced vehicle technologies including vehicle-to-vehicle communications, refining its data collection systems, and shifting its focus to efforts on public education and identifying functional changes including vision, strength, flexibility and cognition.
NHTSAs Older Driver Highway Safety Program Guidelines are based on best practices around the country and include countermeasures that can be implemented to ensure the safety of older drivers, including at-risk drivers, the agency said in a statement. The guidelines encourage state highway safety offices to work closely with driver license officials, state departments of transportation, medical providers and aging services providers, among others.
The agency was careful to note that the changes are not the result of any changes in how the elderly are driving, but rather the result of a changing environment and a better, more complete understanding of safety practices.
Although older drivers are some of the safest drivers on our roads, our plan builds upon the NHTSAs current work to help older people drive as safely and as long as possible, said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland.
This will just make it easier for the Fed Govt. to target the elderly when the death panels start up.
Maybe the idea is that Obama is entitled to decide who can drive on “his” roads (the interstate highways and the old U.S. highways). Federal money involved, after all.
refining its data collection systems,
Remember those little black data collection boxes all cars must be equipped with soon?
That’s a good one.
“Is it not each state which decides who qualifies for a DL?”
Yes, it is, but if you remember back when the Arabs turned off the oil tap back in 1972 and Tricky Dicky cut the speed limit to 55mph, he did it by threatening the states that didn’t want to go along with the loss of their “Federal Highway Funds.” And that act caused the states to hold down their speed limits long after the “oil crisis” had abated.
The same ploy will probably be utilized here. “Go along with what we at NHTSA have decided, or suffer the loss of some of “our Mother’s Milk funding.”
If we don’t start cutting the Federal Government down now, we will all be complete serfs within the next few years. Food, Healthcare, Guns, Cars, Housing, Sex, you name it Uncle is way too involved.
The Feds want to stop Grandpa and Grandma from driving but leave the borders open and grant amnesty. Sounds like illegals will be taxi drivers for the elderly.
I read it... doublespeak and claptrap.
To hell with them.
My license says TEXAS.
“Hard to believe but they did.”
My now departed 92 year old mother renewed her driver’s license here in California six months before she passed away for FIVE MORE YEARS! Written exam and an eye test were all that was required.
The internal combustion engine is the enemy of the (Green) State.
Besides, what petty tyrant wants free citizens with mobility? They might attend political rallies or even drive all the way to D.C. to protest. Anyone who believes driving restrictions will apply only to the elderly doesn't recognize a camel's nose under the tent.
The closest Soylent Green factories will be pre-programmed into the GPS.
Up here in Maine, the idiots super-salt the roads and kill our vehicles with rust.
My advice to folks up here is; go to some other state (South, Midwest) and get the vintage vehicle of your choice, bring it back here, do a complete teardown and re-drivetrain.
Epoxy paint or otherwise rustproof the undercarriage/frame and register it as an antique ($50).
In your case, other than the age, I’d suggest a Ram2500 with the Cummins diesel.
You probably don’t even have to go anywhere to find a good solid one.
ObamaCare wasn't enough.
Here comes ObamaCar.
“Here comes ObamaCar. ‘
Yeah, can you just see the Federal Auto Insurance Website!! He will be able to kill off any car he doesn’t like simply by refusing to insure it!
I don't believe I've changed a tire in the last 40 years. If I have a flat, I'll call Triple A.
Looks like and sounds like a camel sticking it’s nose under a societal tent. Where did this guy Strickland come from that he being from some roadway repair perspective can take it that any old driver is his responsibility. This is a perfect case/situation to find out if our elected representatives work for us or for the perpetuation of power to people with brains and thinking like Strickland. I no longer have had contact with my congress persons but some of these need my attention on this matter.

Ever notice that whatever the stated purpose or title, the real purpose is usually just the opposite? For example Affordable Care Act - it ain’t affordable.
Since older drivers are already some of the safest drivers on the roads, perhaps they should concentrate on the lousy drivers instead of violating the laws against age discrimination?
