The American flag that flies over the Pickens County Sheriff's Office will be raised high tonight despite an order by President Barack Obama that flags across the country be lowered to half-staff to honor the death of iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela.
Sheriff Rick Clark told The Greenville News that he has ordered the flag be raised at the end of today because he said the honor of lowering flags to half-staff should be reserved for Americans.
"The flag at half-staff is for Americans' ultimate sacrifice for our country," Clark said. "We should never stray away from that."
The flag has flown at half-staff and will continue to during daylight hours today in honor of a Low country law enforcement officer who was killed and in honor of Pearl Harbor Day, Clark said.
However, come tonight, the flag will be raised, he said.
On Thursday, Obama ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds until sunset Monday.

Our country is according one of its highest honors to Nelson Mandela, a man who was nothing more than a Communist terrorist with the blood of countless innocents on his hands, and the only reason he didnt succeed in turning South Africa into a Killing Field that would have rivaled Pol Pots, Mao Tse Tungs and Stalins Killing Fields was that he was captured and imprisoned before he could complete his Communist Revolution.

I must say, it never occurred to me to half-staff my flag.

It would have made more sense to lower for Margaret Thatcher — and even then I’m not sure it would be appropriate.

President George W. Bush ordered flags to fly at half-staff at the passing of Pope John Paul II in 2005, President Bill Clinton did so for Yitzhak Rabin (1995) and King Hussein of Jordan (1999), and President Ronald Reagan honored Anwar Sadat in 1981, but the historical precedent most often cited is President Lyndon Johnsons bestowal of the honor in recognition of the passing of Winston Churchill in 1965.

We’d better be prepared to defend this man from all the usual crap that’s headed his way.

I was proud to see that the flag in my borough was flying proud at full mast this morning. Our mayor is a self proclaimed progressive democrat so I doubt it will stay that way. We did good for one day at least.

Wait, there are rules? We can't just do whatever we feel like doing?
In lieu of lowering the American flag to mourn a South African citizen, maybe the Sheriff should have tweeted a picture of himself watching a news report about Mandela like the President did.

"Wed better be prepared to defend this man from all the usual crap thats headed his way." Yes, in a Communist block country, which ours now is, disobedience of your Communist Dictator could result in severe consequences.
