Vatican, Oxford put ancient manuscripts online

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Access to the Gutenberg Bible and other ancient manuscripts has just gotten easier.

The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library put the first of 1.5 million pages of their precious manuscripts online Tuesday, bringing their collections to a global audience for the first time.

Wow this is really bizarre. They are saying this bible is from 1454 yet it looks strangely modern...

Written in Latin, the Gutenberg Bible is an edition of the Vulgate, printed by Johannes Gutenberg, in Mainz, Germany, in the 1450s. Forty-eight copies, or substantial portions of copies, survive, and they are considered to be one of the most valuable books in the world, even though a complete copy has not been sold since 1978.

Dude, the Gutenberg Bible is the first significant document printed with movable type.

It is by definition not a “manuscript.”

This is, however, pretty cool, even if the journalists reporting it are incompetent.

That is amazing. Just think: Da Vinci was a baby and Shakespeare wouldn’t be born for another 100 years when that thing was printed and here is looks brand new. That is mind blowing. If you put that in a book store nobody would notice that it looked any different from any other book .
