After an internal debate, the Obama administration has decided to tell American commercial airlines to comply with China's demands to be notified of any flights through a broad swath of international airspace that it has claimed as an air defense zone, officials said Friday.
Even as the United States continued to send military planes into the zone in defiance of China's declaration, officials said they expected civilian planes to go along with Beijing's new demands out of an abundance of caution. Officials said they were worried about an accident or unintended confrontation that could endanger civilian passengers.
The administrations decision came hours after China said it had scrambled fighter jets for the first time since declaring the zone last week, a move that was seen by Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States as provocative.
The caution reflected in the administrations decision contrasted with that by Japan's government, which told its civilian airlines not to abide by the Chinese rules after they initially began to voluntarily comply.
Chinas assertion of jurisdiction over the airspace, designed to bolster its claim to islands administered by Japan, is not recognized by any of the major powers in the region but the American decision may irritate Tokyo.
Earlier Friday, in announcing it had scrambled jets, China said it had identified two American surveillance planes and 10 Japanese aircraft in its newly declared air defense zone

The country as a whole has lost its nerve and the president merely reflects that. It’s appalling to leave an ally isolated like that in the global politics.
Not by me. Chicoms don't give me spelling lessons. The English language is called that for a reason.
Turin is not Torino, and Rome is not Roma, nor Moscow, Moskva. We speakee English, you malevolent dwarves.
Oddly the Koreans are perfectly willing to go with the Western way of saying their names.
Lee instead of Yi
Park instead of Pak
Kim instead of Gim/Kim/or whatever
They even translate it that way themselves now.
Another advantage of making Korean easier to learn (read anyway) than Japanese (by a good margin) and Chinese (by gigantic margin) was when they started writing/reading from left to right and across the page instead of down in columns. (granted you can still find the old styles around).
But the Chicoms haven't the authority to give English-speakers lectures on using Pinyin orthography when writing in the Queen's English. Or even Fulton Fish Market English.
My point is that Korea is more foreigner friendly than China, which explains is success since the 80’s
Looks like China is doing what Obama does, changes the Rules on a whim.
China always wanted to tell other people how things were going to be. That policy failed in the Opium Wars.
The Opium Wars... wow... that was just messed up all around
But opium-selling was the last and most potent resort of men determined to break the Chinese policy of selling only consumer nondurables to kwai loh, and only for hard cash (silver).
If they get into it in a three-way among the Chicoms, Japanese, and our guys, it'll be the biggest aerial brawl since the Battle of the Philippine Sea, a.k.a. the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot".
It'll also be China's dress rehearsal for the Big One over the Formosa Strait and Taiwan.
He even makes the French surrender monkies look strong.
Let the Chinese start shooting. Barak Insane Obama has brought the weakness of the West, and now he is about to harvest his policies of so called “peace.”
Peace only comes if the military is strong, and a US Commander in Cheif demonstrates that he will use the might of US military power to foil the new leadership at Politburo HQ in Beijing.
The entire Pacific will soon be China’s playground.Say good bye to former allies South Korea, Japan, and Australia. This will be the result of the current Obamanation in the White Hut.
“Obama did hold out for a day or so”
Nah, he was busy appeasing Iran and playing golf.
He only got around to this crisis now and his first action is to surrender.
“Let the Chinese start shooting.”
Exactly. They would never have the balls to shoot down a commercial airline full of civilians.
They would have looked like impotent fools with all that air traffic ignoring their “zone”. Obama should have done nothing but he had to screw this up.
Screwed this up or just another of his endless intentional actions to weaken the US and undermine its traditional allies?
