PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla., (UPI) --
Authorities in Florida said a reported handgun that led to a mall lockdown turned out to be a folded-up apron being carried by a waiter.
The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said the Port Charlotte Town Centre Mall was locked down Monday after deputies received word around 11 a.m. a man was seen carrying a handgun near the facility's J.C. Penny's store, WBBH-TV, Fort Myers, Fla., reported Thursday.
The mall and several nearby schools were put on lockdown while deputies searched the building.
Deputies said they were unable to locate the reported gun-toting man or spot anyone carrying a firearm on security cameras. The mall and schools were on lockdown for about an hour.
The sheriff's office said deputies eventually located the man who was the subject of the report, and they discovered he was a waiter at a local restaurant and he had been carrying his folded-up apron around the mall.

A few months back in Olympia, Washington a man in a black jacket carrying an umbrella was walking on a sidewalk to his bus stop. Someone saw him and told the police a guy in a ninja suit was packing a rifle through the neighborhood and all hell broke loose, including school lockdowns and helicopter searches. Somehow the city survived, along with their newly dedicated memorial to Rachel Corrie at Evergreen College. I hid under my bed.
This is ridiculous. Will Federal law be changed to regulate how to fold aprons?
Someone yelled “Gun!” here on the Ball State U. campus last week.
There was a lot of excitement and a SWAT member discharged his evil assault weapon into the ground (by accident or perhaps the weapon was demonized) and nobody was hurt, human or canine.
It was pretty much a Chinese fire drill with the eggheads looking like a**holes, as usual when it comes to the 2nd amendment.
—several years ago a clamp of some sort fell off a highway stripe painting rig near Hoover Dam. Even on the tv coverage you could see that it was a couple of pieces of approximately 2” X 2” channel iron a couple of feet long—traffic was shut down for an hour or so while the “suspicious “ object was investigated and removed-—
‘Lockdown’. There’s that prison term, again.
It did not lock down.
Then, I went grocery shopping at Target. The world didn't end there either.
Hmmm... wonder why? Maybe because this is a free state?
Look out!! She's got a gun!!
LOL that’s a keeper!
Open carry aprons are really the only way to go.
Yes.
