They are two teenagers from two different worlds in Oakland - one a straight-A student from the hills who identifies as neither he nor she, the other a struggling student who lives in the bullet-riddled flatlands and considers himself a jokester.
On Nov. 4, the jokester, 16-year-old Richard Thomas, lit the skirt of the agender person, 18-year-old Sasha Fleischman, on fire as they rode an AC Transit bus. Fleischman has been in a hospital ever since, undergoing skin grafts for second- and third-degree burns to the legs, and Thomas is in custody, having been charged as an adult with what prosecutors call a hate-motivated assault.
But this has turned out to be much more than a crime story.

Not much to ponder, except for the fact that one individual set another individual on fire. If there were swift justice, the first individual ought to have attained room temperature by now, in the most painful manner possible.
Hard to tell who’s sicker—the idiot who set the other kid on fire, or the other kid, who thinks it’s a girl. Ah—it’s Berkeley, home of the confused.
What is ‘agender’?
Hundreds of black on white beatings and killings are ignored, but because this one involves yet another mutation of gender identity, it gets media attention.
Yep room temp would cure him.
Really? Manhood development?
it’s what comes before ‘bgender’.
I get spam about that.
Stories like this are, unfortunately, useful for propaganda. A child was set on fire -- who doesn't think that is tragic and wrong?? It is a terrible thing and ought never to happen.
A child set someone else on fire -- who doesn't think that child is a monster?? There is no excuse, no justification.
Now, stepping away from these emotionally-charged specifics ...
Do I think parents are wrong to allow children to be transexuals? Yes.
Do I think it is child abuse? Yes.
Do I think transexuals are mentally ill? Yes.
Do I think that treating mental illness with surgery is barbaric? Yes.
Do I expect kids to be kids and be mean to kids who are different? Yes.
I have sympathy for the victim in this case. I have scorn for the perpetrator.
But I do not lose site of the immorality of the LGBT community.
I sure hope there are at least two definitions.
“Richard is a good kid and they may not be rich, but his people raise him right,” said Leroy Goode, a close friend of Thomas’ grandmother, Juliette Stern. Another “good kid”. What are the “bad” kids like?
Within that community, the kids who are raised “right” engage in activities like the “knock out game” and “setting whitey on fire”.
I reserve from judging the victim for his/her condition because I am aware that there are individuals born with both sex organs and gender awareness is linked to hormonal activity, which is not immune from biological malfunction. It’s not all black and white and those that insist it is are stubbornly blind to physical evidence.
The crime as I can see is in the first individual setting on fire the second individual.
agender person .....translation....nutjob.
That does not mean I approve of what was done to him or her or whatever it thinks it is. I don’t. The person who set the uh agender person on fire should be taken out of polite society....forever.
Speaks for itself.
Mega lols!
Plastic based clothing. If “it” had been wearing cotton, wool or silk, “it” wouldn’t have been burned.
