The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has given an award of $1,123,463 to the University of California, Davis to develop “relatively small, inexpensive robots” to aid in harvesting strawberries.

The announcement was made in late October as part of a series of USDA awards “to spur the development and use of robots in American agriculture production,” according to a USDA press release.

The release describes the UC Davis robotics grant as a “project (that) will develop relatively small, inexpensive robots to aid in human harvesting of strawberries.” …

I was talking about the robots, actually.

Nothing comes tax-free under this liberal tyranny.

Not to mention that it’s backbreaking work that no one wants to do

It isn't that hard and the weather here is quite nice. I grew up in Southern Arizona working outdoors in 115 deg heat, and I'm seriously white.

Would have to pay much higher than it does to get non-immigrants to do it

1) That's what it costs. Too expensive? Mechanize.

2) No reason all the welfare and "homeless" guys can't do the work.

agricultural mechanization is the real answer for farming

A problem for conservatives though is fewer jobs in the countryside means fewer conservative voters. Young people find it increasingly hard to find good paying jobs outside of the urban megacenters where the majority votes socialist the world over. Ultra high speed internet in rural areas and self-driving vehicles can enable young people to flee the city communes.

It won’t work. They’ll never get them up in the strawberry trees.

And they don’t shit in the fields and not wash their hands.

Monsanto is way ahead on this. They have genetically engineered strawberries with their own little arms that when ripe pluck themselves off the vine, hip hop themselves over to the tray and hop in.

Would have already been developed without government money had only the the government done what one of their essential purposes is . . . seal the borders.

Of course the Chamber of Commerce and GOP-e are fine with open borders, low wages for AMERICAN workers AND government expenditures on projects.

I’m not sure Israel does strawberries.

I know for certain there is a strawberry picking robot made in Japan, but so far it’s only for specialized greenhouse conditions.

The berry-bot is the commercial version of a robot developed by Japan’s National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) that we saw three years ago.

The US is so far behind I don’t think a US-manufactured commercial product will will make it to market unless it copies the exact specs of the greenhouse rail systems.

Israel does strawberries. I know their technology, especially water technology is making the desert bloom over there. They are pretty high tech on growing stuff.

The best robot to aid in strawberry picking would be one that provided in-field back massages to the pickers.
