Due to the U.S. government shutdown over the past few weeks, the christening of the U.S. Navy and General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works latest creation DDG 1000 (soon to be USS Zumwalt) was unfortunately put on hold.
The good news is, Bath Iron Works shipyard, located in the great state of Maine home of lobsters, pine trees, and Shipyard Ale, released the following images of this incredible ship, with lines that probably havent been seen on a ship since the 19th century.

I'm reminded of TR's Great White Fleet.

I guess it is fitting in that we have a Czar instead of a President
To: RadiationRomeo
the uss constitution has been in commission for close to 250 years... 3.3 billion... for that long... is a bargain at about 12 million a year...

At 14,500 tons, the Zumwalt displaces more than the WWII heavy cruiser Chicago, at 13,600 tons.
Despite the DDG designation, the Zumwalt is a capital ship.

ANY ship is better than the Littoral Combat Ships. Those things will be death traps in combat. :-/

It looks a little like a giant Civil War ironclad at first glance; so it must be racist.

Minus the mass. Those late 19th century coal fired ships with masses always make me laugh. It's like tits on a bull. Even if they did have all of their boilers go out, I wonder exactly how many sailors on those ships would have been experienced enough to get it underway with sails? My guess is, close to zero.

Instead of gun porn, we now have a new category. Ship porn.... : )

That’s why there will only be 3 of them. The Gerald Ford is going to cost over $8 billion.
To: Rummyfan
Where’s the bridge? Does the skipper need a periscope to see outside?
