Sens. Cruz, Lee say they won't block deal

Sens. Cruz, Lee say they won't block deal By Mike Lillis - 10/16/13 12:38 PM ET

Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee said Wednesday that they won't try to block the bipartisan deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling.

"The timing of the vote will make no difference to the outcome," Cruz (R-Texas) said. "I have no intention of delaying the vote."

Cruz and Lee (R-Utah) had spearheaded the campaign to attach ObamaCare language to any new budget bills, and had pushed their colleagues to take a hard-line stance.

But the pair emerged from a meeting of Senate Republicans Wednesday afternoon to say they would let the agreement — which contains only one provision on ObamaCare — move forward.

"Some of us want to see it first — we still don't have text," Lee said. "But provided we get the text and have time t review it and everything, I suspect we'll collapse the time."

There has been speculation that the bipartisan deal might originate in the House, thereby eliminating some procedural hurdles when the bill moved to the Senate. But with Cruz and Lee withdrawing their filibuster threats, several GOP senators said the upper chamber will likely act first on the agreement.

The deal reached by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) would fund the government through Jan. 15 and raise the debt-ceiling until February. It would require income verification for subsidies under ObamaCare, but otherwise leave the helathcare law untouched.

The weeks-long fight over ObamaCare has left the GOP sharply divided and licking its wounds, after centrist Republicans warned for weeks that the battle was futile and damaging to the party.

Several Republicans left the meeting Wednesday grumbling that the conservatives in their ranks had prolonged the impasse even as Republicans were sinking in the polls.

"We left a lot on the table because we couldn't get our act together, but this is the best Mitch could do," said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who will vote for the deal. "We need to stop the bleeding, lessen the damage to the party."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) echoed that message.

"I hope it is another 15 years at least before we have to go through this exercise again," McCain said. "We're in a hole, we have to dig out and come up with a positive agenda."

Cruz is exactly where Churchill was in 1934, in the wilderness even within his own party.

Reagan sometime around 1972 would also be a good comparison.

One positive I would take away for this is that the Democrat template that the public would automatically put 100% of the blame on Republicans did not come to pass.

Was more like a 55-45 split from what I can see. The tactic is on the verge of playing itself out. Notice how hard Obama had to work to produce temporary downward spikes in the Dow to try and prove his point.

Even cruz believes the media when the media say there is a crisis.

He knows there is no crisis, but he also knows he is no way to stop the extension by himself.
This has been going on for five years. The people in Washington are like an addict. They will not stop until somebody stops them or we all end up in the sewer.
The fun part is over now we are going into the ugly part.

How exactly do you "dig out" from a hole? Moron.

Good point. The rule about holes is that when you're in one, STOP DIGGING.

RE :”It's not over. It's just delayed until January.”

Then the congress will borrow a bunch of $$$ to pay those furloughed Fed employees back pay for not working.
More time off at our expense and some will charge overtime to ‘catch up’ , like the IRS.

House passed that bill a couple of Saturdays ago.

And what do we get out of this surrender deal?
A big screwing?

Yuri Bezmenov said that the only way that demoralized people will see the truth is when the boot hits them right in the butt. People are willing to overlook other people’s pain but when it’s their own they wake up. Typically, the balancing act that totalitarian regimes have to do is to kill the newly-awake people before they can organize into a resistance force.

I believe the time now is critical. People will be seeing what is real with their own eyes, at the same time as they hear Baghdad Bob telling them that the Iraqi army is routing the invaders and has secured Baghdad International Airport. The biggest enemy we have faced in all of this is the media. We have to break the media if we are going to ever have this country back - if we are ever going to have people rather than zombies deciding the fate of the country.

My heart is tired. I had hoped it would be different this time. But giving up is not an option. Somehow we need to break the lying media. I don’t know how best to do that. Kristinn, do you have any thoughts about that?

Cruz has been clear and specific all along,,he is not about defunding the entire govt,,he has said the govt should be fully funded, just not Obamacare. Cruz has helped light a fire under me that’s for sure. I know which rinos I am going to strongly and loudly campaign against as their turn comes up (talking mostly about Senators).

McCain
Peter King
MccConnell
Graham
Ayotte

and others...feel free to add names because we have to keep the communication to them going,,this particular hot point may be settled for now,,but these worthless rinos will again get the chance to stab conservatives in the back a few months from now,,,,and I intend on letting them know how I feel about it and hope others do the same.

We cannot let up!

It takes a lot more than 2 Senators to block anything in the Senate. His focus was on Obamacare after all.

You need to look at Bonehead and McConnell.

Saying Ted Cruz is not a man, is just ... “that’s retarted, sir”

You are upset and I share your anger. I do not share your thoughts on Ted Cruz ‘falling for the media hype’.

If you go back and read my comment, the Cruz basher comments was not directed at you, it was a general comment added at the end.

So, call me a moron all you wish, it doesn’t change the fact that what you said earlier was just plain silly.

Exactly. And that’s what we have to find a way to expose, to the ignorant masses.

I was going to write a letter to the editor but this deal takes the wind out of my sails because the fact that Obama is the one who determines what is “essential” seems moot right now. But I think the public needs to see how Obama totally relied on a lying/deceiving media in order to make his “make it hurt” decisions effective. How in the world can a guy flip the bird at the entire country including 90-year-old WWII vets, and wind up - after it all - with the same approval numbers he started out with? The media has hidden how spiteful Obama is.

We found out from Benghazi what Obama would do when he got the “3am phone call”. Well, if the dramatic effect of the immediate funding crisis is over now, it may be a good time to say exactly what we learned: that when the chips are down, Obama will decide that vets, cancer research and treatment, national parks and monuments, Catholic services for military personnel, bereaved military families being able to see the casket come home, paying the nation’s debts, Amber Alert, food stamps, etc are all less important than having his own chef to feed him arugula. He said outright that he didn’t care how long the shut-down lasted. He alone had the discretion to decide which services are “essential”. The only reason to pass the CR’s was to make sure that Obama couldn’t call any of those things non-essential. Because Congress didn’t stop Obama from calling all the above “non-essential”, Obama went ahead and did it. He threw ALL that stuff under the bus.

And now he needs to lie in the bed he’s made. We need to make sure everybody knows the priorities that he showed us, and how the media hid all that. We also need to make sure that the public knows the dems refuse to make money decisions any way EXCEPT the “sausage-making” way. The corrupt, crony, bridge-to-nowhere Chicago backroom deals way is the ONLY way the dems will operate. They showed us that clearly. We need to make sure the public knows that. And that the media - again - totally covered up the slime.

I hope you heard Cruz about an hour ago on C-Span....He was outside the Senate chamber speaking to reporters the same exact time McConnell was inside speaking.

Cruz is still passionate, he will press on!
