One mystery of the government shutdown is why Republicans are so apoplectic about the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that aims to make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans.
One theory is that the Republican leadership is scared that Obamacare actually won't be as bad as they have been saying it will be that, in fact, Americans (including Republican constituents) will quite like it.
If Americans like Obamacare, the theory goes, this will be a big blow to the Republicans' big sales pitch over the past 30 years, which is that more government is always bad. (This despite the popularity of Medicare, Social Security, and other programs that even many Republicans support.) And this, in turn, the theory goes, will be a big blow to the Republican Party.
Well, it seems at least one Republican is pleasantly surprised by the reality of Obamacare.
Sy Mukherjee of ThinkProgress caught up with Butch Matthews, a 61-year-old former small business owner from Little Rock, Arkansas. Matthews, a diehard Republican, was skeptical of Obamacare. But the new law has already allowed him to buy insurance that is both much better, and much cheaper, than the astronomically expensive pre-Obamacare plan he was clinging to from Blue Cross Blue Shield.

‘butch’ is unemployed but can afford to give $4,700 to the Romney campaign in 2012?
LOL ...not if the Death Panel gets to you first.
He gets free premiums and a $750 deductible. You can’t find a silver plan WA state with a deductible that low. They start at $2000 with a cap at 3500, and go down to $1250 with a cap of $7000 for an HMO. I am surprised a deductible like that can be had. That is my polite way of saying I think this Butch story is a load BS.
I am pretty sure he wouldn’t qualify for Medicaid, I think they take your assets into account and not just your income. If assets are not counted then most of the very wealthy would likely qualify for $0 subsidized premiums.

Thanks!!! That really gives me all the fuzzies, and Matthews tingles.
Other skeptics like me have been wondering about “Butch” since that probably is a nickname. Age fits, wife’s name fits. He lives in Sherwood, AR (nice town). The picture they have been showing is the couple at meteor crater, which is a total free enterprise place just in case you were wanting to go. The guy may be right on his end, but he’s not giving a thought to those that will be paying his bills. Sad. Young people starting out, saving for a house, their lives and along come Butch.
Of course we’re afraid people will like it. Obamacare is going to add trillions more to the debt by subsidizing people’s health care and putting taxpayers on the hook for even more than the $140,000 we all each owe now. And once these people are on the teat, they will never vote for anyone who will overturn Obamacare. If we can’t defund it or delay it this month, then the war will be lost. And we’ll be losing elections for a decade if we try to campaign on overturning it before we finally give up trying. It’ll never be overturned, until we finally face our Greece-style day of reckoning. Which will end up with everyone’s bank accounts seized and the destruction of our first-world lifestyle.
Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.
Thanks lowbridge. Partisan Media Shills ping.
Since this is actually the only person that have found that can say something good about Obamacare this story has been reported in hundreds of publications throughout the country. An internet search shows that there is a 61 year old Harland Hiram Matthews and his 60 year old wife Deborah who live in Marion, Arkansas and they have a phone in the 870 area code. They have a 38 year old daughter, Angie and a 33 year old daughter Holley. They previously lived in Sherwood, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee.
Beware, folks, we're going to be inundated with non-stop fake "human interest" stories and non-stop propaganda being churned out by all those ex-media writers now whoring for pay in Obama's basement.
Leni
He probably got the cheapest insurance with the highest deductible and qualified for government subsidy. Otherwise, I don’t believe a word of it.
It’s a mystery why conservatives are opposed to it??
Really?
and this person considers themselves informed and a journolist??
Well, when the analogy that “Nobody Owes You a Living” becomes “The Other Guy Owes You a Living’, you get Obamacare.
It will only work when people have no problem being robbed, but it appears the Robbers outnumber the Victims nowadays.
It seems as if you don't have an income of around six figures in fly over country you're not going to survive this. It amazes me that the trash that continue to write these articles are unable to do basic math and understand that these premiums take the middle class straight to financial ruin.
There are going to be millions of people who simply will not pay for these premiums because they can't. And even if most did, the economic collapse would almost be instant. The only good thing about all of this is that it's collapsing at the starting line.
"The plan he just bought on the Arkansas state exchange has a $0 premium (after the government subsidy he gets because of his low income level) and only a $750 deductible"
How in he H*ll could anyone have been paying $1,069 a month and be in a LOW income level??
The main thing this article proves is how few FR posters actually read an article before they post.
Under Obamacare, because of his lack of income, the guy gets health insurance worth over $20K/year (including premium and deductible) for $750 (deductible only). What’s not to like?
Sounds like it’s time for all of us to quit working. And if you have a spouse who still wants to work, it’s time to get a divorce.
Work hard, save your money, pay off your house and car and you too can become another Welfare Queen.
Sounds like a great ad line for the DNC.
How is that a "theory"? This is written as though all of the disasters which are occurring and have already occurred haven't happened (massive scaling back of health care facilities and available services, some facilities being outlawed, millions of Americans being notified their plans are skyrocketing in premiums or are not longer available at all, they've lost their choice of doctor, elderly couples having their premiums increase dramatically due to having to pay for coverage for pregnancy and childbirth, key parts of Obamacare having to be delayed or even scrapped due to insolvency straight out of the gate, etc). The author is either very ignorant or lying.
