The super ship fit for a superpower: America's $13bn aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford
The London Daily Mail ^ | September 30, 2013 | Staff

Rising from a dry dock, this is America's latest and possibly costliest piece of military machinery ever constructed.

The world's only superpower has released details of its new generation of aircraft carriers - the first of which costs a staggering $13billion - which it hopes will enable it to dominate any battlefield for decades to come.

But that sort of money buys an incredible amount of firepower, with the ship stuffed with cutting-edge and top secret technology.

When finished, the giant 1,106-foot USS Gerald R. Ford will be able to launch 220 airstrikes per day from its two runways, hold 4,000 sailors and marines, and be virtually invisible to enemy radar.

The Navy also plans to buy another three such carriers, at a cost of $43 billion, to complete its fleet.

But the project to build the most advanced aircraft carrier every made has come at a high price, with costs overrunning to the tune of nearly $3billion and major delays.

Beci Brenton, spokesman for Huntington Ingalls Industries, the maker of the ship, told FoxNews.com: 'The structure has been rearranged to accommodate new technology and meet all of the Navy’s operational requirements....

How did the Navy ever get along without the acumen of all FR's strategic geniuses. Why, I bet Naval Operations never even thought about subs, missiles, nukes and such, until our resident experts pointed them out.

Heh....

Don’t buy what the Democrats are selling. We give away more money than the defense budget, nobody complains about that, and we get absolutely nothing for it, except a bunch of people complaining they don’t get more.

Our carriers allow us to effectively extend U. S. soil anywhere they can travel around the world.

Worth every penny...

Nobody needs a $13 billion aircraft carrier.

     . . .    Just get a shotgun!

$13 billion for a single vessel is insane, IMO

And the Russians have a super-cavitating torpedo that is reported to be capable of speeds up to 200 knots (230 mph).

No one is going to attack a carrier with a Squall torpedo. It is designed exclusively for a submarine warfare (sub to sub duels, destroyer vs sub etc).

If we lose it to one shot, I hope some heads roll.

You know those tanks with the “cages” to make RPG’s explode before impact?? Maybe we could fit this ship with something like that.

heh

Obama is spending too much elsewhere and will not fund three more flat tops at $3 billion each.

And in the near future everyone will be complaining of $500 billion dollar 3 mile long super galactic star carriers.
kind of a drag to see so many whiners complaining about military assets America has and will hopefully dominate with.
Or has everyone succumbed to being apologetic like Obama.

That’s what I thought. 1100 plus feet, you cannot hide it from anything. Any radar capable of tracking a surface target will be able to get a return off this at max range.

" For one thing, ICBMs are getting popular and no carrier can defend against them."

Before 2004, that was true. Today, however, naval-launched SM-3s can not only intercept ICBMs in Space (far from the carrier, obviously), but also shoot down satellites at will.

Due to our debt we have not the wherewithal to arm, fuel, man and defend this ship.
