A seventh-grade student in Virginia Beach, Va., has been suspended from school for playing with an airsoft gun with a friend in his front yard while waiting for the school bus.
WAVY-TV reports that 13-year-old Khalid Caraballo will find out soon if he will be expelled for "possession, handling and use of a firearm" because the guns were fired at two others playing in Caraballo's yard.

The school's so-called "zero-tolerance" policy on guns extends to private property, according to the report.

"It's on your school record. The school said I had possession of a firearm. They aren't going to ask me any questions. They are going to think it was a real gun, and I was trying to hurt someone," he said.

Notice how many are so quick to denigrate the School but fail to notice this punk was shooting kids near or at the bus stop. If it were one of my kids the punishment would have been much more severe so I applaud this kids removal.
I think that it's likely an "Airsoft" gun. They're the current fad, at least in my neck of the world. Lots of "airsoft wars" going on. I was a little concerned, until I went out and had them shoot me with one, they're about one step below paintballs. My only rule for my kids is that they need to wear eye protection.
I read the letter from the school principal, referenced in post #30. Fills some of this story in, but not completely. Missing, or glossed over, is whether or not everyone involved was a willing participant.
If my neighbor's kid and my kid were shooting at each other in my backyard, this would be a non-story. However, if my neighbors kid was shooting at my (unarmed, unprotected) kid, while he was waiting for the school bus to come ..... well, then, a school suspension would be the last of his worries.

Crap, when I was in 7th grade I was shooting indoor smallbore at the local high school because the range was in the basement.

An airsoft gun fires soft plastic BBs that will leave a mark but are designed to bounce off the target — hence the name “Air SOFT”.
The ammunition they fire are called Pellets, so the school is calling them by the correct name.
And trust me these “Soft” pellets sting just as bad a a paint ball when they hit.
Airsoft guns definitely leave marks! My son and husband use to go to big airsoft games. The guys make sure they are complete covered in clothing. My guys wore fatigues. Then, they always wear protective eye gear.
The pellets are look a little bigger than BBs, and they are made out of plastic.
They hurt if you get shot!
I had one. I used to shoot corrugated cardboard indoors with it. I once had a bb come straight back at me. Yes, in the eye, but I was wearing glasses, rather than contacts.
After that, I'd take the time to load a dart (or pellet), rather than use the small store of bb's.
Just sayin'.
That said, sue the everybody involved in attempting to extend their petty, and unrelated power to the home.

Probably the best comparison is energy; The plastic pellet gun has approximately 1 joule of energy, the 22 has approximately 95 joules of energy.
While the plastic pellet might sting a bit at close range it is basically harmless. The kids were out of line shooting at the other kids waiting at the bus stop. The school over reacted big time, zero tolerance is a cop out for those to stupid/cowardly to think for themselves. At worst these kids should get a week of detention.
The caller also knew the gun wasn't real and said so, "This is not a real one, but it makes people uncomfortable. I know that it makes me (uncomfortable), as a mom, to see a boy pointing a gun," she told the 911 dispatcher... Ironically, that 911 caller's son was playing with Khalid and Aidan in the Caraballo front yard

Wrong, pellet guns fire metal or lead pellets. Airsoft use only plastic BB's...

Today's kids have no idea who you're talking about. 'Combat' was a hit TV series fifty years ago. I know, because my brothers and I watched it religiously, and played war games with plastic guns every day.
We worked it out of our systems through fantasy play, and grew up to be a pretty sane and balanced lot.
Well that certainly puts a different twist on this report, doesn't it?
Our local High School still has an indoor range and a school sanctioned rifle team that competes with other local school teams.
The school in question is Larkspur Middle School. The principal’s name is Delaney. I think it’s Matthew Delaney. Not sure.
I was going hunting with a shotgun at age 13.
