Having tried and failed to sell restive conservatives on plans to keep the government open without picking a fight over Obamacare, it appears that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is moving on to Plan C: Giving in to people like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) who are insisting that any bill to keep the government open after Sept. 30 must defund Obamacare.
National Review's Robert Costa tweets:
House GOP sources confirm: House GOP WILL soon bring a CR to floor that also defunds, thus putting pressure on Cruz & co to get thru Senate Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
House GOP ldrs basically saying, "Ok, Ted and conservative activists, if you think you can rally public behind this, get it thru Senate..." Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
"... and if you can't, you're going to have to let us use another option. But we'll play along and try this--for now." Robert Costa (@robertcostaNRO) September 17, 2013
I guess the idea is that House Republicans will open with a demand of defunding Obamacare and see if Senate Democrats agree to go along. (Spoiler alert: They won't.) The question is how long Republicans have to leave this demand out there until they've officially determined the strategy isn't going to work.

One can only hope.
I AM a US Govt Employee(US Air Force Civ) and I say, “SHUT the DAMN thing DOWN”!
Failing to see how Ted Cruz has forced anything on anyone....
At this point, what difference does it make?
Better see if the limp-wristed Senate Repukelicans are onboard for you start stalking to the senate communists for their votes.
What America needs, is for American companies, to bring back American jobs, to America.
For an entire generation we have send the world’s strongest economy to the world’s weakest country.
Except the world’s weakest country, has 5 TIMES OUR POPULATION.
So now America has very few actual jobs, everything is made in China - which is rapidly replacing America.
And we argue over stuff which doesn’t really matter.
BRING BACK AMERICAN JOBS NOW.
As Ronald Reagan once said “Let’s shut it down, and see if anyone otices”
I don’t quite remember the 90’s shutdown being so awful “for Republicans” as all the media are saying...
If I remember it correctly it ammounted to nothing but a free paid vacation for all federal workers for 2 days.
No, I don’t see it either, particularly since the bill the House is coalescing behind is one that actually does not shut down the government. It provides funding for those activities, and the only thing it defunds is Obamacare.
Even a lot of Dems might like that, because they could use the fact that it funds the government as an excuse for voting for something that will halt the increasingly unpopular Obamacare.
It would be nice, and I’m getting more and more on his bandwagon, but I doubt it. He forced a vote (which the Senate will urinate on and pass back to the House) at which time Boehner will cave.
Mike Lee created the plan. Cruz signed on and helps sell it.
But the headline doesn’t accuse Mike Lee of anything.
There’s one reason why.
Mike Lee isn’t a lightning rod that well might run for President, far as anyone knows.
This is an attack on Ted Cruz.
Period.
That’s why this thing was written and headlined this way, and Robert Costa who’s quoted is not so subtly ANTI-CONSERVATIVE, ANTI-CRUZ.
Too bad the Republicans don’t have the gonads to put the blame for any shut down where it belongs — on Obama.
As Mark Levin says: “Government shutdown? the whole damn government shuts down every weekend”
let’s hope so, I am done being double crossed by boner
Hopefully the reports on defunding 0bamacare are true. Boehner, true to form, selects the "least dangerous option" to him, which is the right decision for the wrong reason!
We not only need to get rid of this terrible O-care (which is destroying jobs From Sea to Shining Sea),
we need to get rid of this terrible Congressional “leadership,” which is only leading us further into the Obama Depression.
The only ones who are seeking to force a shut down of the government are Obama and the Democrats. Under Cruz’s proposal only Obamacare will not be funded. The rest of the government will be funded and can carry on.
And at noon Friday if Monday is a holiday.
This is an attack on Ted Cruz.
The author, John Barro, is a goosestepping Dem propagandist. The leftist media are getting worked up into a frenzy now in support of Dear Leader. Drudge had an AP wire story today that accused the GOP of taking “hostages”. Disgusting.
The jobs have been driven away by the Marxist policies of the government.
