Washington Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis tried to buy an AR-15 assault rifle at a Virginia gun store last week after test firing one, but the story wouldn't sell it to him, CBS News has learned.
The reason for the refusal isn't clear.
Alexis then purchased a shotgun he used in his rampage, sources tell CBS News.
Twelve people died before Alexis was shot and killed by police.
CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that, while law enforcement officials haven't pinned down a motive for the massacre, Alexis was clearly a troubled man with a history of angry outbursts.

Incredibly, the MSM is trying to make the terrorist a “victim”.
And yet, the MSM is responsible (with the DO”J”
protecting black murderers, rapists and thugs,
and terrorists of any color)
for this carnage, like the last, and the one before it,
and the ones coming soon.
The store wouldn’t sell him the AR because they were racist.
And that was the final straw that set him off...
right?
NYT claims Navy shooter stopped from buying AR-15 because VA has residency law for "assault rifle." NOT TRUE. http://t.co/ehTZIyEy8I— Emily Miller (@EmilyMiller) September 18, 2013
He definitely could NOT have been able to buy an ASSAULT rifle as that is a military rifle that automatically loads and fires with a single trigger pull. He would not have been able to get the Class license to purchase one.
An assault weapon is a military designation rifle. A semi-automatic rifle is NOT.
Again, the media keeps labeling firearms wrongly— for their agenda.
This is like calling a Ford Mustang a Shelby Cobra (a real one that is).
this article is a lie.
The NYT version was very effectively exposed as a fraud by Emily Miller in the Washington Times yesterday. There was even a thread on it last night. My smartphone doesn’t play all that well with FR, so I can’t post it, but someone else should be able to.
I heard that he could have bought the AR-15 but bought the shotgun, instead.
Read Ms. Miller’s piece last night. She did a fine job. Unfortunately, she is one woman against the whole (at least nearly) lsm. Truth don’t matter to them. They don’t need no steenkin’ truth. It really seemed fishy right out of the gate. Can’t buy an AR but can buy a shoutgun? Wrong. FFL guide lines pretty much spell it out and it wouldn’t have taken much research to discover that but that wouldn’t fit their agenda. Thus, “yet another mass” attack on our gun rights. They’re probably fueling up the bloomie bus as we write.
Big lie theory at work. The NYT apparantly can’t tell the difference between an AR-15 and a handgun. They took the fact that the gunman had played with an AR, applied the handgun purchase law and falsely concluded that he’d tried to buy the AR and was denied.
Aaron Alexis passed two background checks, bought shotgun from Sharpshooters in Lorton, Va.
Aaron Alexis passed Federal Bureau Investigation and Virginia state background checks to purchase a shotgun from Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, Va., over the weekend.
Alexis did not attempt to purchase a rifle or handgun from the store, The Washington Times has learned exclusively.
The retail store put the former Navy reservists name through both systems checks before selling him a shotgun and shotgun shells, a source familiar with the investigation said.
The source characterized the amount of ammunition purchased as not much. Sharpshooters captured Alexis on an in-house security camera during the purchase.
Law enforcement took the video Monday to identify the shooter.
So, what is the basis for the claim by SeeBS that Alexis tried to buy an AR-15 but was denied by a state law. The assertion can be proven wrong on two points:
Why did SeeBS make up this assertion out of thin air?
Yes it is CBS, the reason is that your claim is bovine excrement.

you can buy a long rifle or a shotgun if you have proof of residency in any State. You CANNOT buy a handgun if you are NOT a resident of the Commonwealth of VA.

As a former employee of a gun dealer, I can tell you it is always under the store’s discretion whether or not to sell you the gun. If you get any kind of a weird vibe about a customer the law entitles you to say no.
Only did it once. A guy came in dressed in camo fatigues and a Cleveland Indians cap and began doing close-order drills with a rifle he was examining. Kept pestering employees to remove the trigger lock. Chased him out of there and insisted that nobody sell him a gun.
If I was a long time Indians fan, I can see that eventually that would put me over the edge ;)
My greatest fear was that some nubie employee would indulge him and remove the trigger lock.
All the training tells you if you do that and the guy has a shell in his pocket, you’re dead.
They make up laws so that they may advance gun control. They will now push for laws that prohibit a person from out of state from purchasing a firearm.
