Supermarket says it is angry with supplier Comigel after tests reveal 30% and 100% horsemeat in withdrawn ready meals. The environment secretary is due to meet the Food Standards Agency, food suppliers and retailers on Saturday to discuss the horsemeat scandal after Aldi became the latest supermarket to confirm its withdrawn beef products contained up to 100% horsemeat.
Owen Paterson said it was unacceptable that consumers were mis-sold products, but that the problems originated overseas.
"We believe that the two particular cases of the frozen burgers from Tesco and the lasagne from Findus are linked to suppliers in Ireland and France respectively. We and the Food Standards Agency are working closely with the authorities in these countries, as well as with Europol, to get to the root of the problem," he said.
Paterson said he believed the food was safe but urged consumers to return products to the retailers. "The French authorities are saying they are viewing the issue as a case of fraud rather than food safety. Anyone who has these products in their freezer should return them to retailers as a precaution.".
Findus denied reports that the company first knew there was horsemeat in its products last year.
"Findus want to be absolutely explicit that they were not aware of any issue of contamination with horsemeat last year," it said in a statement

Now that there is funny... And I own and care for my horses
Imagine if food containing 30% to 100% pork products was "mislabeled", and then got put on supermarket shelves in the Middle East :)
and
There are billions of heads of cattle out there, raised specifically for meat, so where is all this horse-meat coming from? And how can it be cheaper (presumably the reason it is being used) than such a huge industry as cattle?
If one wants cheap, low-grade cow meat - its out there too. Spent dairy cattle, Brazil, etc....
The world demand for horse meat is probably pretty low as compared to beef, so I would suspect that it is very, very cheap......
I was wondering why I was spending so much time in the back pasture and eating so much oatmeal.
As dog and cat food?.............
Well, that answers the question “where’s the horse?”
I hate Aldi. I went in there ONCE in response to some loss leader ad. They wwanted me to pay 25 cents to use a shopping cart. This is in a nice neighborhood. Bye, bye, I said.
ive got no aversion to it personally - I like tripe....so it doesnt even register on the ick scale for me - BUT French lasagna ?- wtf
But you get your quarter back. It pops out when you return to cart and insert the chain lock.
That is their way of encouraging shoppers to return carts to a specific location, rather than leave them in the parking lot.
I know that, but I found it insulting. I shop everywhere without having to pay for a cart, or a basket. Now that I’ve had a knee replaced, I even use electric carts without any payment. Why does Aldi consider themselves so special?

For crying out loud!
THE 25CENTS IS JUST A TOKEN YOU GET BACK WHEN YOU RETURN THE CART TO THE RACK.
THIS MEANS THERE ARE NO LOOSE CARTS TO ROLL INTO YOUR CAR AND SCRATCH THE PAINT OR WORSE.
WHAT I HEAR IS YOU WERE TOO DARN LAZY TO PUSH THE CART BACK.
I suppose a parking lot cluttered with hastily abandoned carts is better???
NEEDING an electric cart for reason of disability is a different matter.
One day I pocketed a quick 75cents for no more than a couple minutes “work” of racking shopper-abandoned Aldi carts before going in to get my groceries.Of course I also pick up loose change from the sidewalk.
How many who are too busy/lazy to get a moment’s exercise returning shopping carts properly have memberships in a gym where they pay to be allowed to exercise?
