KABUL: Indian national Sushmita Banerjee, whose memoir about her dramatic escape from the Taliban was turned into a Bollywood film, was shot dead in Afghanistan by militants, police said on Thursday.
Banerjee, 49, was killed outside her home in Paktika province. She was married to Afghan businessman Jaanbaz Khan and recently moved back to Afghanistan to live with him.
Taliban militants arrived at her home in the provincial capital of Kharana, tied up her husband and other members of the family, took Banerjee out and shot her, police were quoted as saying by BBC.
The militants dumped Banerjee's body near a religious school, police said.
A senior police official said Banerjee, also known as Sayed Kamala, was working as a health worker in Paktika and had been filming the lives of local women as part of her work.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Banerjee's book "Kabuliwalar Bangali Bou" (A Kabuliwala's Bengali Wife), about her escape from the Taliban in 1995, became a bestseller in India and was made into the Bollywood film "Escape From Taliban" in 2003.
The memoir focussed on her life in Afghanistan with her husband and her escape from the militants.
The film based on the book starred actress Manisha Koirala and was billed as a "story of a woman who dares (the) Taliban".
Any Liberals in Congress wanting to send aid to the murderers yet?
Why would she move into a war zone? She had to know she would be a target. Post traumatic stress disorder? Sad.
Such a peaceful religion..............
Has Zer0 taken out mullah Omar yet?
Yeah, I escape from the Taliban once... I am NOT going back.
Because she was courageous and wanted to fight, in her own way, against the evil that is triumphing in Afghanistan.
And we’re supposed to be comforted by John Kerry telling us that only a quarter of the rebels in Syria are jihadis.
So what, it’s not like the republicans war on women was after her. She is lucky she was not in a country that allows republican war on women.
She moved BACK to Afganistan?...... DUuuuuugh!..
Has Obama called her husband and given his condolences?
And I was just wondering, if Obama had a wife, would she look like Sushmita Banerjee? (Oh, that’s right...I guess not)
Additionally, while I understand her desire to live with her husband in Afghanistan...where she had aparently lived when she was kidnapped), I cannot believe that she had not been informed how bad of an idea that was. She escaped from the Taliban, which had to have put her on their list...but then she wrote a best seller book about it that was made into a movie. After that, there is no doubt that she would have been on those animal’s kill list.
She and her husband should have mnoved to India, way away from the Kashmir.

And that seems to have worked out really well for her.
Really? You really think she was unaware of the consequences of her going back to Afghanistan? It seems more reasonable to see her actions reflecting her willingness to put her life on the line for what she believed was the truth.
One woman's sacrifice is the gain of humanity. A thousand years from now she will be remembered and admired.
Without being a Christian she lived and breathed the example of Christ. I hope to one day show 1/1000th of the courage she showed in the face of evil.
It’s sad to see people succumb to such stupidity.
The only thing that an escapee from a moslem country should send back is an exploding nuke.
She'll be forgotten next week as just another example.
You could say the same thing about the people at the Alamo... that didnt work out very well for them either. or Flight 93 for that matter. to fight evil you dont always have to “win”... to win.
Depends on the follow-up as always.

That got to be one of the most over the top statements I’ve seen in a while. The woman was absolutely stupid and must have had a death wish to go back to Afghanistan after what she did and the movie that was made about what she did. And no she did not represent Christ or even “breathed the example of Christ” that’s such a bunch of heresy it’s not even funny.
RIP.
