Miley Cyrus's twerking routine was cultural appropriation at its worst
The Guardian (London) ^ | August 27, 2013 | Hadley Freeman

So like King, I too have a dream: I have a dream that female celebrities will one day feel that they don't need to imitate porn actors on magazine covers and in their stage acts. I have a dream that the predominantly white music world will stop reducing black music to grills and bitches and twerking. And I have a dream that stupid songs about seducing "good girls" will be laughed at instead of sent to No 1. And most of all, I dream that I never, ever have to see Miley Cyrus gyrating against Robin Thicke's crotch again. We won't be free then, but it will be a start.

What he is, is bipolar.

People with the disease often self-medicate.

Billy Joel is a genius.

Sad what has happened to Billy Joel...

Even sadder is his daughter. She got Billy’s looks and Christie Brinkley’s musical talent.

Billy Joel is a genius.

I know a lot about bipolar. And I would venture to say most bipolar people are not active alcoholics.

Billy Joel is an entertainer. I have seen him in concert and I enjoyed it.

But I would not call him a genius.

And my main complaint is the message of "Only the Good Die Young." It's not a good message, particularly for teenaged girls.

Miley Cyrus got what she was after.
Publicity.

She’s all people are talking about, all the talk shows, water cooler.
Everyone will be anticipating her next gig.

Billy Joel is a singer.

Any evidence that he is a genius?

One thing I like about Billy Joel is that it seems he’s never become an “iconic cultural figure” like Bruce Springsteen, so we don’t have to get overwrought about him.

Over more years than I really feel like remembering at this early hour, I’ve liked a lot of his songs.

You said...
“Miley Cyrus got what she was after.

And she helps distract the American sheeple from the real issues such as the state of our nation

Precisely. Most of these stupid, so-called entertainers will stoop to doing ANYTHING to gain attention and get more publicity. A few months ago it was all about “wardrobe malfunctions” as the female entertainers clothes just kept falling apart at very appropriate times, take Janet Jackson and her Super Bowl act for example. There must have been a boat load of poor seamstresses loose about that time but it did get them attention. So here we are today on FR talking about those same type issues. Pay them no attention and perhaps they will eventually either “go all the way” to get the attention they seek or hopefully, stop their stupid stunts.

Ah. "Reducing black music to grills and bitches and twerking" from mysoginism, gangsta worship and baby momma advocacy.

No wonder they are irritated with her. She is diluting black hip-hop culture!

She just needs to realize she’s not Madonna. All seems very childish.

“I have a dream that female celebrities will one day feel that they don’t need to imitate porn actors on magazine covers and in their stage acts.”

Musically, they have nothing to offer so they have to include the sleaziness to make up for a lack of actual talent and musicianship.

Billy Joel is a master on the piano. He’s a songwriter.

He does both the lyrics and the music...

Evidence that he’s a genius? Well...I’m not in possession of any official test...but man...sometimes when I listen to his music I am so transported. I don’t know why anyone would get pissy at him. Give these a listen.

And these aren’t even his most well-known.
