I grocery shop all the time....a pound of mediocre hamburger is in the $6 range unless you can get the “about to pass expiration date” deals like I search for. Bacon was $2.98-3.98 a pound; sometimes store brands in the $2-$2.50 area. Now $6.98 a lot of the time.

Milk, eggs, gas, bread, cheese, butter-—most of the food that isn’t included in the government’s list for economy standards are all up substantially. Other products still have the same prices and same size boxes, but less ingredients. Who the hell ever heard of a package with 11.3, 11.4, or 11.7 ounces ten years ago?

I've gotten some really good deals on near-expiration burger - $1.33 to $1.67 a pound. Buy a bunch and freeze it. I make chili and pasta sauce with it so it really stretches out.

I refuse to pay more than $2/pound for meat.

For a family that has to buy in volume each week, it has to be tough nowadays, they just can't wait for the deals like I can.

A bit of a cost saving tip: Almost always, the bacon at the service counter is cheaper than the packaged bacon, and I think much higher quality than the other option. Yesterday's trip to the market, the service counter bacon was $3.98 a pound, a half pound package of bacon in the cooler was $3.50.
