Weiner’s Behavior Prompts a Question: Why Did He Do It?
NY Times ^ | July 29, 2013 | KATE TAYLOR and JAVIER C. HERNÁNDEZ

As Anthony D. Weiner tries to repair the damage left by new revelations about his online behavior with women, one question nags at voters and those who once supported him: Why did he do it?

Why did Mr. Weiner, who already forfeited his Congressional seat and imperiled his marriage, return to social media sites and send explicit messages and photos to strangers? Did he discount the risks to his family, his reputation and his career, or not understand them?

His pattern of behavior is intriguing to mental health professionals and experts on sexual behavior, who — while they emphasize they cannot offer an authoritative diagnosis without examining him — discussed a variety of possible explanations for such conduct.

Some suggested the indiscretions might be an addiction with neurological roots. Others theorized that Mr. Weiner, a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York, could be meeting sexual needs unsatisfied in a marriage. And still others said he might be driven by a combination of a mood disorder and feelings of inadequacy to seek reassurance about his masculinity from women he had never met.

How an accomplished adult could continually engage in such behavior and believe that he would not be caught would be a central question in any diagnosis, said Dr. Richard C. Friedman, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College.

“It’s almost as if a little child were playing at being a politician and trying to hide something,” Dr. Friedman said. “The level of denial is so great, and it’s so incompatible with major responsibility, that the psychological puzzle is not only to find out why he’s doing the particular behavior, but why somebody would be functioning at such an uneven level.”

By saying the dude is “sick” in whatever form you express it, you are handing him an excuse, and committing yourself to admitting that “he’s been cured” once he takes that way out, signs on for 3 weeks to the Betty Ford Clinic, or wherever, and comes out claiming he’s “cured”. In fact, a million people are doing what Danger’s been doing, they’re perfectly normal by today’s standards, only that they don’t run for public office.

Well yes he is, however the notable thing is that people are trying to delve into the issue of “why is a pervert a pervert?”

It may sound like so much cant to many people to hear this, but God did furnish a revelation sufficient to understand in principle why, and also sufficient to show the way to get made whole again which when seriously undertaken will show the individual places where mending is needed to become whole and will furnish the unifying power. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of salvation, both to the Jew and to the ‘Greek’.” “Unite my heart to fear Thy name.”

For the same reason that he first insisted that the Clinton administration did not trash the White House, and demanded that President Bush show proof that it happened or shut up about it.

It's about being as audacious as you can, to see just what you can get away with.

Until you actually come to know a refuge of healing that is more specific than 12-step groups, please try not to spout too much damnation. We are ALL sick puppies and the bible uses that very term, sick.

Weiner is only a little bit whackier than many New York City types, the place breeds them, attracts them and concentrates them.

Why is it my responsibility to care why he did it? I don’t. That he did what he did speaks for itself.

“His compulsion to have this behavior is strong as he is smart enough to know his entire present and future could be destroyed, yet he did it anyway as he did it before and suffered consequences.”

Definitely, but that is kind of the norm with compulsive or addictive behavior, isn’t it? Smokers know that smoking will kill them, but they do it anyway. A child molester released from jail knows that if they molest again, they’ll probably end up right back in jail, but they do it anyway. If the urge is strong enough, future negative consequences aren’t enough to dissuade someone.

As a health professional you can spot that Weiner has some psychological problems causing him to do what he is doing. He is a middle son. Middle sons typically vie for attention, not always, but typically. Combine this with a little bitter cruelty symptom and you have Anthony Weiner. Did you watch any of his interviews? He was always talking over his interviewers to keep the attention focused on him, and he was always abusively immature. I suspect as well that his sex life with Huma is rather milque toast at best ...she’s not interested in sex with him, she’s interested in a political marriage for obvious reasons—what a coup it would be for her to become first lady of NYC and possibly in the future, with the Clinton’s help, the White House. I suspect these virtual sexual fantasy games he’s playing not only satisfy his need for childish attention, but also satisfy his ego and allows him to dominate his fairer partner like a he-man. What he’s doing is not ‘of evil’; however it does show a childish mentality, not capable of responsible decisions. And of course shows that he has no ethics or strength of character.

Interesting insights. Did you read Olivia Nuzzi’s article in the Daily News about her time as a Weiner campaign intern? There is another thread about it, but here’s a direct link. In it she describes how Carlos gathered all 20 of his staffers, asked each his or her name claiming that he could remember them all, then not being able to identify a single one (calling two of the girls ‘Monica’!) before giving up and walking away. A comical scene. I wonder what you think about it.

I think, that whatever his psycho problems, he was in that instance showing off, trying to imitate his hero Bill Clinton, who, I suspect, would succeed playing a similar game.
