As Anthony D. Weiner tries to repair the damage left by new revelations about his online behavior with women, one question nags at voters and those who once supported him: Why did he do it?
Why did Mr. Weiner, who already forfeited his Congressional seat and imperiled his marriage, return to social media sites and send explicit messages and photos to strangers? Did he discount the risks to his family, his reputation and his career, or not understand them?
His pattern of behavior is intriguing to mental health professionals and experts on sexual behavior, who while they emphasize they cannot offer an authoritative diagnosis without examining him discussed a variety of possible explanations for such conduct.
Some suggested the indiscretions might be an addiction with neurological roots. Others theorized that Mr. Weiner, a Democratic candidate for mayor of New York, could be meeting sexual needs unsatisfied in a marriage. And still others said he might be driven by a combination of a mood disorder and feelings of inadequacy to seek reassurance about his masculinity from women he had never met.
How an accomplished adult could continually engage in such behavior and believe that he would not be caught would be a central question in any diagnosis, said Dr. Richard C. Friedman, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Its almost as if a little child were playing at being a politician and trying to hide something, Dr. Friedman said. The level of denial is so great, and its so incompatible with major responsibility, that the psychological puzzle is not only to find out why hes doing the particular behavior, but why somebody would be functioning at such an uneven level.

simple: an adult life of entitlement.
He’s a psychopath. He thinks he’s the only real person on the universe.
Because he could. Silly question from the unwashed masses.
Because he knows that low information voters will still vote for him? They don’t care about what he does as long as he keeps those freebies coming.
Same reason that millions upon millions of men in America watch porn...sex addicted!
He’s a Democrat, it’s in his DNA
Weiner’s career has so far been bouncing around from double-A to triple-A and back down again. He knows what it what it would take, he sees things like homicide while drunk, pages, cigars and lying under oath about sex. He thinks its now his big chance to join the ‘Rats Team up in the Major’s. He wants to be in The Show.
Psychology can tell us next to nothing without bringing spirituality into consideration and that involves things that are more subtle than explicit religions (though religions do deal with spiritual matters to various scopes... I claim Christianity to be a full-scope system for dealing with spiritual matters in interest of full disclosure).
There’s evil here and there’s also lostness here. The pieces of what had been a man but got discombobulated in various ways at the Fall.
Triple A? I did not know he was a car enthusiast?
Why shouldn’t he do it?
No one is holding him accountable, so why not?
If this is the way women like to be treated, then treat them that way.
He is one sick puppy?
well the dirty secret is that we’re all sick puppies, but not all sick in the way weiner is sick.
This a real possiblity.
His compulsion to have this behavior is strong as he is smart enough to know his entire present and future could be destroyed, yet he did it anyway as he did it before and suffered consequences. He needs to have serious mental help and that may not work, either, as it didn’t the last time. I suspect he is in denial of how serious his problem is.
One would think he wouldn’t want to show his face in public but what is he doing? Out there in the public everyday - “See me, here I am.”
He has a teenie weenie?
Inferiority complex might have a basis in fact.
Because he’s a disgusting pervert?
He took those pictures because he wanted to expose people to a different point of view. It’s what progressives do.
