Trayvon Martin's father to Congressional task force: 'What can we do...?'

The circumstances and aftermath of the Trayvon Martin shooting took the center stage Wednesday at the first ever meeting of the Congressional Black Men and Boys Caucus, aimed at addressing issues affecting black boys and their growth.

"We have to train them [black boys] because there's nobody really out there to train them to be good men," said Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., pointing to an education and mentoring program in Miami-Dade County schools. "These boys are not to be feared, they are meant to be loved."

The caucus, first formed in March, is aimed at educating members of Congress on issues which disproportionately affect black men and boys.

Wilson said Trayvon Martin is a "martyr who brought to the forefront the struggles of black and brown boys," a statement later echoed by his father, Tracy Martin.

However, Tracy Martin said in a clear, steady voice, President Barack Obama also deserves credit for "weighing in [on the case] from an African American perspective."

"It sparks the conversation in every household over the dinner table and the conversation is: What can we do to keep this from happening to your son?" Tracy Martin said. "What can we do as a people, as a nation to keep other kids from dying?"

Tracy Martin said the Trayvon Martin Foundation, founded in March 2012, is focused on working against similar situations and targets senseless crime and gun violence. It will also provide mentoring programs and education on Florida laws and their effects.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents Trayvon Martin's family and sat beside Tracy Martin during the hearing, had another idea to prevent similar situations: changing the Stand Your Ground law.

Crump said they are hoping to have the law amended to state that a person cannot initiate a confrontation "and then throw up their hands and claim Stand Your Ground."

For her part, caucus co-chair Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., said the change must be more drastic.

"We want to roll back the [Stand Your Ground] law, starting in Florida," Norton said.

Other speakers at the caucus included Michael Eric Dyson, a professor of sociology at Georgetown University, David Johns, the executive director for the White House's initiative on education excellence for African Americans, and Kweisi Mfume, the former president of the NAACP.

The first meeting for the newly founded caucus, co-chaired by Norton and Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., was announced on July 18.

George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., was found not guilty of murder on July 13 in Trayvon Martin's shooting death.

Yeah. Well, Dad's not sitting at the dinner table -- and that's the problem.

It’s actually really simple what you can do.

Raise your Sons to be Men, not Thugs.

Raise your Sons that just because of the color of your skin the USA doesn’t OWE you anything.

RAISE your Sons!

See? Pretty damn simple.

“What can we do?” Well, Mr. Martin, you could have raised your son to not be a violent jerk.

I guess “Attorney” Benjamin Crump didn’t follow the case closely enough to know that Stand Your Ground wasn’t a part of it.

What a complete tool and buffoon. Quit wasting oxygen, Crump!

Why didn’t his father train him? I know he wasn’t living there but why would he wash his hands of his son’s future? WHy do we need to develop other sources if father’s exist and spend time agitating AFTER the child is dead but not while they are growing up, turning into thugs. Didn’t Trayvon’s father let him down?

For starters, teach your kid to be an upright, moral and law-abiding good citizen, not a ghetto trash dope-smoking, drank-swilling, swaggering, misogynistic MMA thug. It’s really not hard to do...if you set a good example yourself.

What a thoroughly despicable thing to say. It's an admission that the feral government has completely destroyed the black family and the government has to take the place of absent fathers. Our caring and benevolent government which is crushing Christianity, will aid and abet the murder of any innocent unborn baby, which wants to control our very bodies, has killed all jobs in the country and has turned our military over to radical feminists and the homos. Yes, they'll do an excellent job of raising our black boys.

You could start by taking that 500 lb chip off your shoulder. You don’t see Whites wanting anything for 500K of us Whites dying to give you ungrateful mooches your freedom.

Pray for America to Wake Up

He might try doing something to get young black men to stop killing young black men...which is apparently 700 times more dangerous than a half-white half-Hispanic man.
