Police in South Australia arrested a man who was found driving a car with no steering wheel and using a pair of vise grips to steer.

At about 8:25 a.m. Monday, police saw the driver of a white Holden sedan driving dangerously on two flat tires in the North Eastern suburbs, police say. When cops stopped the car, they found that no steering wheel was attached and the driver was using a pair of vise grips to guide and turn the car.

The car was unregistered and uninsured and was the subject of a defect notice not to be driven.

Further investigation revealed the car had been involved in a non-fatal hit and run minutes earlier.

The driver, 38, was found to be driving while disqualified and tested positive for methylamphetamine and cannabis, police said.

He was arrested and faces seven charges, including failing to stop at the scene of a crash and driving while disqualified.

If only he'd had enough foresight to kidnap a thirteen-year-old girl, he'd have been qualified for high elective office.

I watched a guy paint his car in the street in front of his house with a pea green flat latex paint years ago.

Wonder if we know the same guy (not sure about the latex part, though). As an added feature, mine gave it a vinyl top.....with undercoating.

If God had intended cars to have steering wheels he would have invented them that way.

Years ago I watched a neighbor paint his car with a vacuum cleaner. It worked ... sorta.

I know a guy who founds some John Deere tractor paint so he brush painted his Nova with it. His girlfriend even painted some good looking John Deere emblems for it.

Fortunately, he wasn’t in Russia where they have no vice grips

I had a 1960 dodge panel truck, flathead 6 with 3 on the tree.

the tree kept braking...I had the shift lever welded to the shaft that runs along the steering column numerous time, and each time this lasted for a few days....I finally just used a large pair of vise-grips.....

sometime you have to do what you have to do.....

I laud you for your commitment to safety. Using two pairs of vise-grips SO much safer than relying on a single pair. That guy must be crazy.

And safety isn’t the only concern - there’s also convenience. having a set of vise grips on either side of the steering column allows you to shift your cup of coffee from one hand to the other without having to reach across your body to steer.

I’ve driven my share of beaters. One car that I had when I was stationed in Germany lost its reverse gear and I drove it for a couple of months like that. I had another car that the battery went dead and I couldn’t afford to replace it until payday. One day when push starting it in the parking lot in back of my apartment building, when jumping into the drivers seat, I hit the side of my head on the door frame and just about knocked myself out. I was starting to black out as the car was rolling into the street, but managed to shake it off and stayed conscious!

Other than the stoned part, I can have sympathy for the driver. Back in my young, foolish, and broke days, I drove my Corvair home for about 15 miles with no clutch or brakes. I even dropped my girlfriend off at her house. There was no way I could have afforded a wrecker.

I hit a stump out in the woods which took out the clutch cable and brake line. I could only shift out of reverse by backing the car up a hill, stopping the engine, and then shifting while the engine was stopped. I could restart the engine in gear since it was then pointing down hill. I shifted gears using only the throttle to match the engine speed to the car speed to take any torque off the driveline. Stop lights were the most difficult. With no brakes or clutch, I had to adjust speed to reach all of the intersections with green lights. I had to run through stop signs in low gear. I was fully prepared to shut off the engine and drive into the ditch for any emergencies (which didn't happen).

It’s easy to see how that shot could be shopped to fit the story even better.

I think I can top this. Many years ago a cousin of mine who was an auto mechanic actually rigged a car for a practical joke on his spouse who often complained of his driving. He built in a steering system into the floor of his car that allowed him to steer with his feet and arranged for the steering wheel to come off. Then, when she started complaining, he handed her the steering wheel and said, “OK, then, you steer it!”

Damn, I would have wanted to be in the car to witness that one!

Back in the days of doers.

My grandfather told me about salvaging an old water heater from a bombed out house in WWII Belgium, cutting the top of it off with thermite, and turning it into a 40 gallon coffee percolator. He said it made him real popular with his artillery battery for a while.

Always park on a hill?
