One of the most haunting songs I’ve ever heard.

Its time for the
Seattle Chamber Music Festival! We have a concert scheduled for Monday, July 22. Thanks to the miracle of the Internet, you can hear the concerts live at the website of KING-FM. Ill be providing programs and links to the concerts throughout the summer festival. In preparation for a concert, Ill give you a preview of the pieces to be played. On concert nights, Ill introduce the musicians.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts favorite passions in sports were bowling and billiards. He bet and lost a lot of money at the billiard table before the game of pocket billiards, or pool, was invented. The term kegelstatt means bowling alley, which is where he wrote this piece while awaiting his turn with the ball. Mozart could actually listen to another composers piece at a concert while writing a piece of his own. Thats concentration!
The clarinettist for whom this piece was written was Anton Stadler, who ended up being the soloist who premiered Mozarts Clarinet Quintet and Clarinet Concerto. The clarinet was a new instrument at the time, descended from the chalameau, which had a deeper, throatier tone. Stadler had a clarinet that could go five tones lower than the modern instrument, which gave him a greater range.
The first movement of this Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat, K. 498, Kegelstatt,, in a period instrument performance, starts andante (walking pace) with two themes, one in E-flat, and the second in B-flat, both in a languid 3/4. His development works the themes up in A-flat and then through a variety of keys. Mozart re-composes his recapitulation and ends it sweetly.
The minuet second movement breaks up 3/4 into one-and-two-and-three-and, which is minuet tempo. The middle section features the viola running rings around the clarinet.
The allegretto finale is in rondo format, duple time, and is the heavyweight movement in the work, written when Mozart was 30. Youll hear that beguiling opening theme a lot in rondo format.
Mozart: Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat, K. 498, Kegelstatt
