United States Flag/Patriotism Quiz

Part One: Fill in the number

1. The current flag of the United States of America has ____ white 5-pointed stars in the blue rectangular canton known as the “union”.

2. The red and white stripes on the American flag represent the original _____ British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union.

3. The flag is displayed at half-staff (half-mast) as a sign of respect or mourning. Nationwide, this action is proclaimed by the president; state-wide or territory-wide, the proclamation may be made by the governor. Upon the death of a president or former president the flag is traditionally lowered to half-staff for ____ days.

Part Two: True Or False

4. _____ The flag of the United States of America should always be treated with respect.

5. _____ The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing.

6. _____ The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground.

7. _____ When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

8. _____ To properly fly the flag at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the top of the staff, and then lowered to the half-staff position, halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. Similarly, when the flag is to be lowered from half-staff, it should be first briefly hoisted to the top of the staff.

9. _____ According to United States military custom, flags should be folded into a triangular shape with 13 folds when not in use.

10. _____ Traditionally, the flag of the United States plays a role in military funerals and occasionally in funerals of other civil servants (such as law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and U.S. presidents). A burial flag is draped over the casket during services. Just prior to the casket being lowered into the ground, the flag is ceremonially folded and presented to the next of kin as a token of respect.

11. _____ Nicknames for the flag include the “Stars and Stripes”, “Old Glory”, and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

12. _____ When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium, the flag of the United States should hold the position of superior prominence, in front of the audience, and in the position of honor at the clergyman’s or speaker’s right as he faces the audience. Any other flag should be placed on the left of the clergyman or speaker or to the right of the audience.

13. _____The flag of the United States of America should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.

14. _____ When two or more flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last.

15. _____ According to the Flag Code (Title 4, Chapter 1) of the United States, “The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.”

16. _____ The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

Part Three: Multiple Choice

17. The first official flag of the United States was commissioned

A. On December 3, 1775, by the Continental Congress. Called the Grand Union flag and sometimes referred to as the Congress Colors, the Navy Ensign, and the Cambridge Flag, its design consisted of 13 red and white stripes with a blue field in the upper left-hand corner bearing the red cross of St. George of England with the white cross of St. Andrew of Scotland (called the Union Jack). It was first raised aboard Captain Esek Hopkin’s flagship by John Paul Jones and flew on the liberty pole at Prospect Hill, which was near General George Washington’s headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

B. In 1776, by Robert Morris, a wealthy businessman who helped to finance the American Revolution, General George Washington, the man responsible for winning the war and Colonel George Ross a relative of twenty-four-year-old seamstress Betsy Ross of Philadelphia who sewed the first 13 star; 13 stripes version of the American flag. It was officially adopted by the Second Continental Congress at Philadelphia on June 14, 1777 to replace the unofficial Grand Union flag.

C. In 1794, by the US Congress featuring 15 stars and 15 stripes. This flag was the official flag of our country from 1795 to 1818, and inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the bombardment of Fort McHenry.

18. Traditionally our nation’s flag is a symbol of

A. Liberty

B. Freedom

C. Sovereignty

D. Unity

E. All of the Above

19. The Stars and Stripes on the American Flag represent:

C. The stars represent the collected states of the Union and the stripes represent the original 13 colonies.

D. All of the Above.

20. Which best describes a “Patriot”?

B. One who loves, supports and defends his country.

C. A politician.

D. Someone who gives to charity.

E. Freedom to bear Arms

F. Freedom of Service

G. Freedom to Assemble

H. Freedom to petition the government for redress of Grievances

I. Freedom of Speech

Part Four: Extra Credit Write from memory the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

This quiz counts as 1/3 of their final grade for the Patriotism Badge. Another part consists of demonstrating proper respect and protocol when raising, lowering and displaying the flag as well as folding it for storage. The final is a 100 word essay on two American Patriots. Most of the boys have chosen various founding fathers and presidents, however one of the guys who graduates this year has chosen his big brother who serves in Afghanistan as one of his heroes. I’m proud of dem boys.

Keef and Mick Taylor are birds of a feather.
Jagger was never my cup of tea.

I also think Charlie Watts is outstanding.

Jagger used to live here and shop where I shop.
Nobody misses him.

I’ve never been a huge Stones fan - I cut my teeth on John, Paul, George and Ringo and the Stones just had too many rough edges and slop back in the day, but over the years I have of course come to admire their contributions and influence. Their early blues, covering Muddy, Bo Diddly, Slim Harpo, Willie Dixon and Chester (Howlin’ Wolf) was instrumental in pushing the British blues movement of the 60’s where I jumped in ‘67. The Stones have influenced about everyone and their longevity is incredible. Just seeing Mick do what he does at his age is something to behold (rooster on acid), but I can’t afford tickets at $300 and $600 a pop, so I wait for the DVDs. I have great respect for them but, outside of a few masterpieces they seldom make my hit parade. That said, 50 years of Stones made a great jukebox this week.
