(CNN) - An Asiana Airlines' Boeing 777 crashed and burned Saturday while landing at San Francisco International Airport, sending up a large plume of dark smoke from the aircraft, which lost its tail and much of its roof.

No bomb. The plane was too low, and when landing, the tail apparently hit the embankment just at the edge of the bay, thus the 'pop' sound.
The plane didn't 'cartwheel', like the landing in Sioux City, all those years ago. According to a witness on the ground, the plane hit the ground too hard, I guess the landing gear snapped, and the plane slid, spinning around, on it's belly, as it did so. When it came to a stop, the fire began. Amazing that ONLY two people died.
I don’t know how many times I flew into Kai Tak in the mid to late 60’s. Always on PanAm flight 001 and landing late at night or very early morning hours. You are right it was a PIP!
Since July 1, This plane had been everywhere.

That makes sense. I was wondering how they’d fool the radio altimeter through acars for a cat 3.
It must have spun horizontally on the ground; witness probably just misspoke.
Was 001 the round the world flight?
Asiana ranks as the second best airline in the world, next to Qatar,...

On FNC earlier, they said Asianair was the second ranked airline in South Korea. Korean Air was number one there.
You may be onto something there — if they were doing a practice CAT 3 (weather was VMC) then signal interference to the ILS or an internal malfunction (one of the radar altimeters, possibly) could cause a pitch-over. The pilot could simply disconnect the autopilot and land, but may not have done it in time. From the looks of it the airplane may have been only about 100 feet low.
ILS 28L NOTAM....G/S AND DME OTS. Can’t do a practice autoland.

The five star airlines are listed in alphabetical order.
The little small piece of debris is the water is the tail skid, deploys with the landing gear. Designed to keep the tail section of the fuselage from striking the ground from over rotation on take off and too high of a nose attitude during landing. It struck the edge of the rock jetty and ripped the fuselage off at the rear pressure bulkhead which is the strongest point of the back of the fuselage.
Would have made one hell of a “bang” and would have looked like an explosion to a casual observer on the ground.
Pilot error, too low of an approach, quite possible from pilot fatigue as a result of long international flight.
Pilot will soon be flying paper airplanes.
I just checked it — that’s true. The 28L g/s has been out of service for a long time.
There are no autoland approaches available to 28L there today... no doubt they were hand-flying on short final.

Yes thank God so many people survived. Its a miracle it was not worse.
I've flown both - Asiana is head and shoulders above Korean Air.
Thanks for posting the ratings, too.
Several unaccounted for...
001 was the round the world flight. In those days if you knew enough to say “ft” to a “stewardess” they knew you were one and all the upgrades just happened as you boarded. “ft” (frequent traveler) this was before all the stuff we have now, it was kinda like a secret club. very cool.
