Monsanto Executive Is Among World Food Prize Winners
The New York Times ^ | June 19, 2013 | ANDREW POLLACK

For the first time in its 27-year history, a prestigious award for enhancing the global food supply has gone to a creator of genetically modified crops, a top scientist at Monsanto. The choice is likely to add more heat to an intense debate about the role biotechnology can play in combating world hunger. Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, will share the $250,000 World Food Prize with two other scientists who helped devise how to insert foreign genes into plants: Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States.

The announcement was made in Washington on Wednesday, accompanied by a speech from Secretary of State John Kerry.

The prize was started in 1987 by Norman E. Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for bringing about the Green Revolution, which vastly increased grain output, and who thought there should be a Nobel Prize for agriculture. The award is given to those who improve the “quality, quantity or availability” of food in the world.

Most conservatives are totally ignorant on the Monsanto issues.

“Want to reduce land and feed for milk producing livestock, we’ve got a solution.”

Want a better solution than giving yet another corporation (with BFFs on both sides of the aisle) my tax dollars? Reducing the tax dollars I pay even more by ending farm subsidies! Land, feed, milk, etc. all taken care of! Two birds, one stone. Ah, the beauty of the free market.

The exact same FReepers show up on every single thread to defend Monsanto. I actually think that they work for them. There can be no reason why a conservative would support global food supply control and giving billions of our tax dollars to a company. It’s frightening to know the level that Monsanto will go to!

Monsanto is just a Welfare Queen on Steroids. No real conservative supports Monsanto and its Big Government excesses

” I`ll take mine without genetically engineered pesticides thank you.”

What is wrong with them? Do you know the first thing about them other than other liberals talk them down?

What tax dollars do they get?

Reducing the tax dollars I pay even more by ending farm subsidies!

Yes! End farm subsidies, end sugar quotas and end the ethanol mandates! What does that have to do with Monsanto or the scientific illiterates who attack them?

Now it often just means stupid knee jerk negativity.

Or knee-jerk "business always good" blindness.

I’m not doing your research for you. When I make decisions for myself and my family I gather the info myself. I’m not a liberal who relies on the work, or merely hearsay, of others. As you are on FreeRepublic you know how to use the Internet. Your local librarian can assist you with finding reliable, scholarly research. whitehouse.gov and other .govs have links to legislation that you can read for yourself. Now I’m off to see what my gmo free, heirloom seeded, chemical-free, composted, natural weed barriered, rain watered garden has for today’s lunch and supper! It’s great not relying on Monsanto practices and chemicals to feed my family of four, soon to be five, practically all year even in zone 6b.

If you don’t know how the free market system works and how in our current economy Monsanto and farm subsidies are linked, there is no help for you. Take your scientific literacy to DU. I hear they use science all the time to prove global warming and expound upon the benefits of abortion.

I’m not doing your research for you.

You're right, why should you prove your silly claim, I should prove it for you.

LOL!

I’m not a liberal who relies on the work, or merely hearsay, of others.

I know, you're a liberal who makes claims with no proof.

If you don’t know how the free market system works and how in our current economy Monsanto and farm subsidies are linked

So, now your claim is that Monsanto gets your tax dollars because farmers who get subsidies use that money to buy stuff from Monsanto?

Wow, that's a stretch.

Tell you what, I'll bet that even if farm subsidies ended tomorrow (I can dream, can't I?), Monsanto would still sell stuff to farmers.

Take your scientific literacy to DU. I hear they use science all the time to prove global warming

I'm just as happy mocking global warming idiots as I am mocking you.

No that is not what I’m claiming. You need to analyze the free market system a bit more but you will get there if you try. Nice name calling by the way. Rules for Radicals all the way, huh? Seriously though, you need to put down the science books proclaiming a fetus isn’t a baby and can’t feel pain and study up a bit on Adam Smith.

If I do, will that show what tax dollars are going to Monsanto?

Nice name calling by the way.

An idiot by any other name.....

Seriously though, you need to put down the science books proclaiming a fetus isn’t a baby and can’t feel pain

I don't have any evil science books that make that claim.

Anytime you find proof of your claims, feel free to post them.

Or just run away.

I’ve suggested you do your own work. Gasp! You have yet to practice what you demand of others and provide proof of your opinions. So you make claims, when others suggest otherwise you demand proof without providing your own, and then you ridicule. You dance around the issues. It’s quite funny to witness this from somebody who claims to be scientific minded while calling others idiots. The Monsanto-less beets I just plucked from the ground are splendid, by the way. Looks like the kids will be eating lunch shirtless because I’m not in the mood to soak and destain clothing.

The only thing you've proven here is that the person who posted earlier about you needing immediate psychological evaluation knows what he's talking about. Get help, because you are one seriously twisted broad.

I’m “twisted” because I dislike my taxes going to support companies that should be supporting themselves? Keep name calling. That will really advance your agenda here on FR. That’s what the few Monsanto supporters here on FR have in common. Nice to see you take the side of somebody who, if his/ her claims are true, practices in a profession that has declared homosexuality is no longer a psychological issue but gun owners need a psychological classification. Sure. I don’t like Monsanto so I don’t use their products. If you like them keep using them. That’s how conservatism works. But don’t use my tax dollars to support an agenda.
