Obviously everyone on this thread except you has positive memories of it. Lear’s goals back then were to make people laugh. The politics came later. Besides its not like Rob Reiner’s character came off as all that admirable. Let me guess, you think that Dr Strangelove and Its a Wonderful Life were propagdant too? If you dig deep enough online you can find people who do.
Great actress!
Rest In Peace, Edith Bunker!
not one ounce of any thing bad in her, her husband;s and her children’s lives....just good people....RIP Mrs Stapelton
Remember that he wasn't truly "evil", he always redeemed himself by slowly accepting each and every liberal view to some degree.
"""All in the Family" explored racism, homosexuality, women's liberation, menopause, impotence, the Vietnam War and the loss of faith.""
""Though he was a bigot, Lear said, Archie wasn't a bad man. Archie's opinions softened and audiences got to see the man behind the bluster as the series progressed. Archie, Lear said, "was just afraid." That fear was reflected in the title song, "Those Were the Days," sung by O'Connor and Stapleton, and written by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams of "Bye Bye Birdie" fame.
"Archie was afraid of tomorrow," Lear said. "That was his big problem.""
i guess edith finally shut up. rip, dingbat. /archie
Gee the same refrain you always repeat, no, the politics didn't come "later", they were the purpose of the series and as my earlier post showed, we conservatives saw it the left saw it also, Hollywood loved the series, you never see it anywhere. You don't seem to be perceptive in regards to film entertainment.
archie was damn right to be afraid of the marxist dialectic or what we call incrementalism.
Huh? It was hugely popular at the time among everybody. and remains hugely popular. There was a lot of blowback about it from the Left actually that they made Archie too likable. Apparently, Bill Cosby still hates it.
It takes smarts to play dumb and innocent as well as she did. RIP, Jean.
All in the Family was hardcore communistic propaganda. Archie was a caricature of a married, blue-collar conservative made to look like an inarticulate bumbling fool shown up even week by his oh so enlightened college educated liberal kids. It was deliberately designed to mock traditional values and condition the American public to reject those values as out-dated, bigoted, and uncool.
If you dig deep enough you can find some sort of ‘bias’ in just about anything. A cultural artifact will reflect some world view. If its too narrow or shallow it won’t endure. Lear later had The Jeffersons which centered around a black racist. You would NEVER see that today.
looks like a white collar Archie, too. Must be after church.
She played the batty motel owner in Michael.
Sorry to hear that, lots of us chose to watch it for its humor and ignored everything else. It didn't affect our own political leanings whatsoever.......
As for your other off the wall claims, the American family wasn't redefined nor was the American father and mother.
The American family, father and mother remained exactly as they were throughout the lifetime of the sitcom.
Some people definitely need to get a life.........sheesh!
What I find fascinating is that Archie does not fit into the two currently reigning stereotypes the Left has of conservatives. He wasn’t a ‘ruthless Corporate bigwig’ and he wasn’t a ‘redneck Bible-thumper’. The fact is that blue collar union workers are who the Left regard as their own.
There is zero doubt what the politics and the political purpose of all in the Family was, some on the left wanted more from Archie’s character and was disappointed that some people couldn’t see his true role, but that is what makes propaganda effective, it has to be palatable enough to get delivered, to reach the public.
Children’s TV does the same, it can’t work if it is so obvious that the parents just forbid it, and turn off the TV.
Archie Bunker is still one of the most beloved characters in TV history.
No wonder the the left was so effective in reshaping the American culture over the last 40 years through TV, and movies, it seems to be the perfect medium for it, perfect.
Good God, that is your conservative argument?
Do you have any conservative instincts in you?
