Unapproved genetically modified wheat from Monsanto found in Oregon field
Washington Post ^ | May 30, 2013 | Steven Mufson

Posted on 05/30/2013 8:00:45 PM PDT by Ron C.

Japan, the largest market for U.S. wheat exports, suspended imports from the United States and canceled a major purchase of white wheat on Thursday after the recent discovery of unapproved genetically modified wheat in an 80-acre field in Oregon.

How the altered crop made its way to the Oregon field remains a mystery. The strain was developed by Monsanto to make wheat resistant to the company’s own industry-leading weed killer. Monsanto tested the type of altered seed in more than a dozen states, including Oregon, between 1994 and 2005, but it was never approved for commercial use.

Yet the Agriculture Department reported that recent tests identified the strain after an Oregon farmer trying to clear a field sprayed Monsanto’s herbicide, Roundup, and found that the wheat could not be killed.

The report rattled U.S. wheat markets. In addition to Japan’s action, the European Union, which imports more than 1 million tons of U.S. wheat a year, said that it was following developments “to ensure E.U. zero-tolerance policy is implemented.” It asked Monsanto to help detection efforts in Europe.

And you sir are exactly right. CDC estimates that each year roughly 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases.

And misguided people posting here are concerned with glyphosate, a simple herbicide with a glycine amino acid and a few phosphate groups attached. It is all about risk perspective.

Fully understand the in vitro effects, but Bt has been used by organic gardens for several decades without ill effects in humans. It is devastating in catepillars.

See below. Yes, I am not computer literate, doesn’t make me a fool.

Computer literacy isn’t what the discussion is about. The discussion concerns Monsanto and their involvement in production agriculture. I know many people who simply never had an interest in computers. I use a computer as a tool and have little interest in most of the other electronic gadgets that so many young people play with as some kind of an amusement game.

I should have said “above” because the study covers kidney disease which happens to be near and dear to my right kidney. Bt is an envirotoxin end of story.

From link

Bt has been used for years as a naturally-derived pesticide; the big difference here is that Monsanto’s gene-splicing wizards made corn and other food-bearing plants grow the Bt internally. When it’s used in organic agriculture you can just wash the Bt off with water; you can’t do that when it’s inside ever cell of the corn you’re eating.

I am well aware of gene injection of Bt into corn. It has been around for a dozen years. I would be willing to bet the residues on garden veggies and what is found in corn grain are quite comparable and well below the no-observable-effect level.

I am sympathetic to your kidney disease, but Bt is a naturally occurring toxin produced by Bacillus thurengensis, a gram positive bacteria. It has been around for thousands of years and is part of the environment.

All toxins produce a range of symptoms, none of them good, depending on the availability of receptors.

Monsanto has said that we don't have a receptor for the toxin in their GMO food.

Never think that a bacterial toxin is a harmless thing however. It doesn't matter if it is naturally occurring or not, all toxins - with a working receptor - will produce a range of symptoms as a response, such as inflammation, fever, etc.
That is in fact why they are called toxins.

Finally, it is worth noting that much of what Monsanto claimed about this has been proven wrong. For instance they said the toxin would break down in the (human, extremely low pH) stomach, but it is not doing that.

This story is just beginning.

You statement says to me, very clearly, that you are not a toxicologist. There is nothing out there that is not toxic. Name anything; any element, compound, or mixture that is not toxic. Pure water is toxic if the dose is sufficient. Go ahead, name one that is not toxic? See Paracelsus—this man recognized this truth around 1500 AD. We all live in a toxic world, there is no escape. You must get over your extreme views. The leftist nutbags are here to attack every private enterprise using deceit, lies, and distortions. I’m a scientist, not a leftist or one of their corrupt lawyers in it for the money.

Not really why they are called toxins. There are a host of toxins that cause neither fever or inflammation. They simply put an end to metabolism, you die.

I am a microbiologist. Toxins are not the same as something being toxic. You are confused by the terminology I think. Definition of a toxin is below.

A poisonous substance, especially a protein, that is produced by living cells or organisms and is capable of causing disease when introduced into the body tissues but is often also capable of inducing neutralizing antibodies or antitoxins.

Actually you are incorrect re: part of your statement. A toxin *always* has the ability to produce illness, fever, etc. It depends on the host whether it does or not.

For instance the chemo patients we see are far more likely to succumb to a toxin than you or I might be.

See my post above for the definition of a toxin. When someone gets sick from an infection, it is the toxin produced that is making them sick. When you get a vaccine, you are getting ( most often) the toxin along with parts of the cell membrane.

the wikipedia

A toxin is a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms; man-made substances created by artificial processes are thus excluded...

For a toxic substance not produced within living organisms, "toxicant" and "toxics" are also sometimes used.

I know what a toxin is—simply a poison of bio origin. However, all things are toxic, whether bio in origin or not. Please, I have taken a half-dozen courses on the subject, taught the subject, and provided therapeutic advice for 100s of clinical cases.
