The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
Yep..that is gonna be the other shoe...the IRS shared confidential tax info with the WH.
Impeachment here we come...soon!
Miller is successfully wasting huge amounts of the 5 minutes of time the congresscreeps have. He knows what he is doing and it is clear he knows if he just keeps going in circles he the clock will run out. He has already won and he knows it.
I know the next questioner is a Dem because he started by thanking them for their “illuminating and helpful” testimony.
“ensure that this does not happen in the future” — DRINK!
Not so sure. I actually think he wasted time hammering Miller while Miller was trying to clarify the question.
Yes they were both sworn in, I’d have to bet he’s been caught in at least three lies today.
Bet on him having a “get out of jail free” agreement. Else I don’t think he’d be quite this brazen.
Question is does Miller really have to give them anything?
He’s out either way unless criminal charges are brought against him..and that’s not going to happen.
They need to ask the IG when/if he briefed the Treasury Secretary about the findings of the IG report. By law, the IG must do so.
Miller is a lawyer and knows that he is being asked a question by another lawyer who knows the answer before it is asked. The fact that Miller is not answering is a big deal. When he is being evasive he is lying.
Miller knows all the info went through Geithner’s treasury dept. to the WH counsel. He’s trying to keep his story straight!
Citizens United again. Rats blaming the courts.
Some IRS thug gave private National Organization for Marriage tax information to the Human Rights Campaign.
Wonderful. Just wonderful. </sarc>
Max Baucus says there is more to this scandal. Is that what is coming?
I pray you’re right.
But remember these low levelers are more than willing to be seen as liars...and the idiots they are...just like Obama.
Yep. Sworn in at the start. (With a statement from the Chairman not so subtly stating that the reason was the previous deceptions from the earlier IRS hearing)
And there was Washington on the BRAZOS aka Washington, Texas. That was overwhelmed by nearby College Station and Texas A&M... Whoop!
I stand corrected!
I think we seeing the Joe bite me ploy. Act like a buffoon to distract from the issue at hand.
