The House Ways and Means Committee holds the first Congressional hearing on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) subjecting applicants for tax-exempt status to higher levels of scrutiny based on political leanings.
Witnesses include Acting IRS Commissioner Steve Miller who resigned on Wednesday and the Treasury Departments Inspector General Russell George for Tax Administration.
Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said the IRS' targeting of "American taxpayers based on politics is both astounding and appalling." He stated that the Committee will "get to the bottom of this practice and ensure it never takes place again.
In announcing the hearing, Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) said that it is "essential that there be a thorough and bipartisan investigation and effective remedial action.
Since June 2011, the Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service discriminated against taxpayers based on political opinions.
“I thought it was Parks, but I could have mis-heard.”
You may be right. This has me so angry I’ve already started on the beer. And it’s only 0950. Wonder what time the next AA meeting starts?
Paul Ryan is there. I took some time out for breakfast so I don’t know the whole roster. A guy from Ohio was beating on Miller pretty good a little while ago.

Nancy J. Marks Named Division Counsel/Associate Chief Counsel, TE/GE
Sept. 10, 2004
....”maybe the GOP is just using this as an initial sparring round, and the real preparations are going on for next week’s hearings and the ones to follow”.....
Hopefully saving the right questions for those who cannot dodge....without looking like the liars they are.
My concern is they are.. ‘willing’... to be seen as liars without a bit of shame or embarrassment....in order to keep the truth from being known.
It’s a them against us mentality and they are playing it as so...War!
It seems that nothing short of divine intervention will work at this point
Sad to say, we are getting to the point that a strategically-placed lightning bolt is our only hope.....all the Jedis are being eliminated.
Yes, he did say he was a cop for 33 years.
Nancy Marks or Marx.
LOL!
When I lived in Denver there was a saying, “Coors, the breakfast of champions” :-)
“Reichert is proof that what you do in high school means little to nothing (I went to HS with him...lol)”
Yep. Aa a thrity retired LEO I can tell you that my high school days should have prevented me from ever getting into law enforcement. The Lord watches out for fools and little children.
Hmmm...depends on how old you are, I think.
I’m going to respond to your assertion that the Irs often settles for their original assessment by a third.
This is true but it’s very much part of the plan. They charge for the tax as they claim is owed. Then they add interest and penalties. When they settled they will kindly deduct the extra charges with the end result being they get most of the tax they think is due.
However, I’ve done payroll all my life, also tax returns. Spent a lot time dealing with IRS. MAN I COULD WRITE A BOOK.
But i never ever lost to them. Never.
All you gotta do is document their error, overrun them with words. My experience is that they give in. They aren’t half as smart as me.
Uh oh...
This is for you and the beer...

NANCY MARKS
Yep..out take just played on Fox. Nancy Marks.
Bookmarking...got eat breakfast.
Yup, Nancy Marx. Irony...
I just watched some and BLAH , the Republicans dig and then the Democrats try to bury ,it like Abbott and Costello trying to dip a hole
I do wish the Repubs would take a moment to point out that the NAACP investigation was based on activities by an organization that had ALREADY been granted its tax-exempt status; and it was based on campaign-related things they were actually doing, not that they MIGHT do in the future. Apples and oranges.
But then, the Dems have a precarious grasp of English, so it won’t mean much to them.
Marks looks down the totem pole a peg or two. Is Miller protecting Wilkins?
