Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the 69-year-old former NBA star and Hall of Famer, says he will not seek another term in office. Instead, he will explore a bid for Wayne County executive.
His decision not to seek re-election is not a huge surprise, given that the struggling city is currently being run by a state-appointed emergency financial manager who is considering a municipal bankruptcy. The announcement leaves former Detroit Medical Center chief Mike Duggan and Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon as the two frontrunners for the four-year term. Five other candidates are in the running. The top two vote-getters on Aug. 5 advance to the Nov. 6 general election.
Bing was elected mayor in May 2009 to complete the remaining months of disgraced ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatricks second term. Voters re-elected him to a full term that November. Bing had bold ideas for fixing the city, but proved to be ineffective as mayor, often clashing with city unions and the City Council.
Bing was featured in a Forbes cover story, City of Hope, in June 2011, and talked candidly about the citys troubles. Right now its all about survival, he said at the time. I believe this city has a futureotherwise I wouldnt be doing what Im doing, because its a thankless job.

Which will piss off the dems so much so that the GOP will be bounced out of office in minimal time. Can't have any of that "growth" thing going on, it'll create too much independence. That's anathema to the dark side.
Bing never could rebound.
Well, someone had to break tradition.
Oh just maybe the fact that the administration of Detroit is corrupt and incompetent? Or maybe the fact that they've run a $200,000,000 annual deficit for the last 4 years and were too stupid or venal to do anything about it. Or maybe the fact that even in corrupt Philly, corrupt DC, and corrupt Baltimore they manage not to spend more than they take in. Someone is getting the loot, and I find it hard to believe that the mayor as the man at the top didn't have his finger in the pie. Or maybe you think all of those IRS harassment cases were initiated by "low level employees." rather than the turd in the white house.
Or possibly you think that he reached the status of mayor in a corrupt and arguable the most mismanged large city in the USA without knowing about or participating in any of the shenanigans.
RE: Bing never could rebound.
He wasn’t bad for a point guard.
Career NBA statistics
Points 18,327 (20.3 ppg)
Rebounds 3,420 (3.8 rpg)
Assists 5,397 (6.0 apg)
Detroit is bankrupt, and under an emergency manager. It has greatly reduced potential for graft, so continuing to be mayor is unattractive.
Wayne county includes Detroit plus the surrounding suburbs. There's still money there, and opportunities to skim money to himself and his friends.
Dteroit will never rebound unless it undergoes a thorough demographic change.
Aha. Like locusts that move on after devouring everything edible, so too will Bing?
Who on God’s Green Earth would WANT the job of Mayor of Detroit??
Give it to Canada, and rename it “South Windsor.”
Oops, my bad, it actually should be “North Windsor.”
What the hell did Canada ever do to you?
If you have a chance to watch the Netflix stream of the film Detropia, it’s worth a watch. Detroit in abject ruin with people who have a portrait of Obama framed on the wall and speaking negatively about capitalism. It’s already a third-world city with no taxpayers to support it. The union meeting scenes speak for themselves.

There’s no credible argument that Mayor Bing is anything other than wholly honest. He was not a part of any prior Detroit administration.
Are you kidding? Who wants to live in Islamaville?
Yep saw it...it’s a mess there with little hope of recovery short of the Federal Government stepping up to the plate...and even then it’s questionable...it will take years to even push back the scum there.
That was 1980....it’s 2013...and nothing came from that.
It’s going down no matter how the picture might be painted by those who are otherwise hopeful.
Someone mentioned to just bulldose it all down and make it farmland....might not be a bad idea when one faces reality.
