And now you get stupidities like broadcasters referring to black people from Africa as “african-americans”.

This pretended fastidiousness about terminology has a long history, mirrored in religious disputes. But it is much sillier.
Perfectly acceptable terms have been denigrated in favor of new euphemisms, which after a time are themselves relegated to the list of condemned names.
An amusing part of this is that the named groups often hold on to the old terms, at least among themselves. The liberal intellectuals play with the new words, which they ceremoniously approve. Thus we are not to call people American Indians. When I have talked to actual people, they tell me that they are fine being called an Indian, and it is what they call themselves. But even they are eventually pressured into some new term. It was then “Native American,” as inaccurate a term as the one it replaced.
Homosexuals have demanded to be called “gay,” when usually they are not very gay at all (in the old sense of the world), but more often confused, fearful, angry, &c. Now they are lumped under LBTG or some such combination, very easily confused with LS/MFT.
People always wish to be called something which exalts themselves. It reminds me of a professor I knew, who was asked by a student how he should be addressed: Dr., Professor, or by his first name. His response was, that he preferred to be called “Your majesty.”

Criminal invaders. They should have been turned back at the border or sent back when they are caught. There is a legal means to get into the country and they should be made to use it. If the system is broken, it should be fixed, not just ignored. There are many people here who immigrated using the system; just giving amnesty or free entry dimishes the rights of those that went through proper channels.
Worst still, referencing Brazilian Blacks in the US as "African-Americans". FWIW, it is now legitimate and formal in Mexico to refer to that race as "Negro".
