On Monday, former Washington Wizards center Jason Collins revealed to the world that he is gay, prompting a complete media meltdown. Collins appeared on Good Morning America; he made the cover of Sports Illustrated; he became the lead on Huffington Post. The president of the United States congratulated him at a press conference, and the former president of the United States congratulated him via Twitter. So did the first lady, the commissioner of the National Basketball Association and a bevy of pundits and athletes across the spectrum.
Which leaves one question: What's the big deal?
Tennis star Martina Navratilova, the best player of her era, came out in 1981. Ellen Degeneres came out on national television in 1997. The president and CEO of the Golden State Warriors, Rick Welts, is openly gay. Top politicians, rock stars, athletes, movie and television stars and business moguls are gay. Gay Americans have been announcing their sexual orientation for decades. Why the hubbub?
The media announced that Collins was a hero because he had provided hope to millions of gay male teens. There is some credibility to that argument. But there is another, more powerful aftertaste from the media's champagne party for Collins: The bitter feeling that America is a nasty place, so nasty that we require overwhelming shows of support for people who just want to live their lives. When the media labels Collins another Jackie Robinson, that not only does massive injustice to Robinson, it implies that America of 2013 is to sexuality what America of 1947 was to race. That is not only ignorant. It is tremendously harmful.
The hubbub from the media assumes that America is a massively homophobic place -- a place where people like Collins must regularly fear for their lives,

No.
Much of America has be come nasty and the LACK of “Homophobia” (or plain disgust) is probably part of the cause of that nastiness.
What an important issue to be concerned about! It’s not like there’s real oppression anywhere else in the world. Let’s focus on imaginary oppression here instead.
If this country ever endures another CW2, payback is going to be a bee-eye-itch for these scum.
He is liar and exposed his long term girlfriend to all kinds various diseases, but yes lets applaud perversion.
While our bisexual Kenyan-born imposter was slobbering all over this horribly mediocre NBA “star?” and calling the sodomite a hero, the four people recklessly murdered by Obambi and Clintoon, who should have been called heroes, were ignored.
What a pathetic bunch of ba$tards we have running around in our White House.
Now for the real question: Has the President made a date with him yet, so that he can really congratulate him properly?
Lost souls congratulating one another for the tawdriness of their lives.
Answer: No.
Comment: We should be, but we have lost our ability to resist social, moral and political corruption.
No,we are not haters, but I am appalled at how the word “hero”
has morphed into something that now is laughable and used to describe one’s sexual preference.
“The media announced that Collins was a hero because he had provided hope to millions of gay male teens.”
I would be astonished if there were 5 out of 100 homosexuals in the general population. Gay is a political affliction where somebody makes a lifestyle choice to have sex with the same sex. Homosexual is somebody who is actually, naturally attracted to the same sex. Gays are aware of homosexuals and have attempted to eliminate the word as offensive and thus coopt the small number of naturals to their cause.
If there were large numbers of gays, why is JC Penney’s so badly damaged by their embrace of gay customers at the expense of advertising for traditional families? Gay is and always has been a style statement. It’s about drama and popularity and acceptance in a particular Hedonistic inner circle. The interesting thing about gay marriage is that so few gays marry when it is legal. Why is that?
Homosexuals are different in that they may, or may not maintain conservative values. A Gay is, by definition, a liberal (communist.)
America has become nasty because of open homosexuality.
Early on, my mother told me not to talk about a persons sex life unless I had a first person experience. I really don’t care what people do, I just don’t want them to yap incessantly in my face about their behavior, trying to normalize it. I do not want to learn about a person’s twerking regardless of who or what they do it with (”an East Texas boy will have sex with any live person and most vegetables.”
Professional basketball has always been liberal. The WNBA is mostly lesbian, the NBA has always been oriented toward the Democrat Party. It has also been very hostile to Christianity. It purposely schedules games on Christmas and censures Christians that complained. Openly embracing male homosexuality comes natural for the NBA.
Yes, but they need the term “homophobia” to sound all medical and to try an make normal folks seem mentally ill.
Most Americans I know don’t give a damn so long as you don’t rub their faces in it.
