Throughout Boston and its surrounding suburbs — a metro area usually clogged and bustling on a weekday morning — residents found themselves ordered to stay in — or stay out — of their homes Friday morning, as police launched an unprecedented hunt for Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, an immigrant of Chechen origin who grew up in Cambridge and was identified in video footage from the site of Monday’s deadly attack.
The major universities that are the city’s lifeblood shut down. The web of buses and squealing transit cars of the oldest underground subway in the nation ground to a halt. The gleaming skyscrapers with names of insurance companies and banks in downtown Boston were lightly peopled.
Stuck without any transportation, Bostonians watched televised news updates and tracked social media sites at their homes, glancing outside to ponder empty streets and shuttered businesses.
“When big men with guns and bullet proof vests order you to get out, you get out,” said Tim Fiedler, 23, who lives on Norfolk Street, where the Tsarnaev family lives.
A notice from Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s office said residents of Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge, Allston, Brighton and the entire city of Boston should stay indoors.

It’s showing more and more the police screwed this up,..
The only reason why they came to light is because of a failed car jacking but how did they get away with all the cops out on the street, hell bozo and his free loading wife was less than half a mile away from the bombers.
All the cops out there, cell phone service shut down, transport shut down all over the city, taxis nothing at sometimes and they still have not got him.
bozo right now is shouting kill him so he does not have to put up with where to charge him, under what charges, what courts and dead people cannot talk.

Is door to door warrentless searches by military police, Federal ATF, SWAT, and Watertown police in keeping with the 4th ammendment? What records are they keeping? This guy had a gun? This guy had drug paraphenalia on his coffee table?

I would assume although the city is issuing orders in effect they are not being enforced and the “lockdown” is voluntary except in areas where they have active crime scenes. Most people probably are staying inside because they want to. If police are searching homes etc without a warrant that is a different story...

That reminds me of an incident in Tucson a few years back. Some guy went off his meds, killed one person then was “at large”, they shut down a big chunk of the city, including my path home from a movie, many hours later they found that he’d killed himself... in his own apartment... adjacent to where he killed the other guy. I got a buck that says the first cop that said “hey did anybody check his apartment” got fired.
I heard someone on Fox say that some of the blood found at the scene was tested and matches the suspect who is still at large. So... it sounds like he was indeed wounded.... and perhaps laying dead under some shrub somewhere around there. Perhaps he’s under my sister’s porch... her house is right there in the middle of everything.
