Key measures of New York's tough new gun law kicked in Monday, with owners of firearms now reclassified as assault weapons required to start registering the firearms and new limits on the number of bullets allowed in magazines.
As the new provisions took effect, New York's affiliate of the National Rifle Association planned to file a court request for a federal injunction to immediate halt to the magazine limit.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls those and other provisions in the state's new gun law common sense while dismissing criticisms he says come from "extreme fringe conservatives" who claim the government has no right to regulate guns.
"Yes, they are against it, but they are the extremists and the extremists shouldn't win, especially on this issue when it is so important to the majority," Cuomo said in a radio interview last week. "In politics, we have to be willing to take on the extremists, otherwise you will see paralysis."
New York's new gun restrictions, the first in the nation passed following December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, limit state gun owners to no more than seven bullets in magazines, except at competitions or firing ranges. (Read the rest)

It requires owners to register an estimated 1 million guns previously not classified as assault weapons by April 15, 2014, though law enforcement officials acknowledge they don't know exactly how many such guns New Yorkers have.
The assault weapon definition also applies to some shotguns and handguns .....
wait... you have to register EXISTING GUNS???
I would like to see them line up the gangbangers to take down their names...
Devils like Cuomo do not consider ‘banning and regulating’ to be infringing? ... No, they know what they’re doing is unConstitutional but they also know why the pirate Roberts was placed ont he court with Kagan and Sotomayor.
Gee are the criminals, illegal aliens, terrorists and mentally ill people having these weapons registering them or is it just law abiding citizens who legally purchased these firearms?
DON'T DO IT
NY has a history of using registration lists for confiscation lists later.
Makes me glad I live in a free state, but it makes me sad that this is happening in America.
Cuomolini is expanding his confiscation list.
He noted in Mass, gun ownership has fallen to 1/8th of what it was via all the laws in the Peoples Socialist Republik, because people got tired of the hassle and gave-up.
I'd love to see the real numbers on that, i.e. did people go underground with their ownership, or did they leave the State
It could be one reason Mass is so Blue, any Conservative with a brain left...
I could be coming to NY as well, this could be the last straw for many, to sell and get the Hell out of that Socialist Cesspool..
Lots of unfortunate boating accidents happening right now around Lake George, I suppose.
I would bury mine in cosmoline before I registered it.
I have lost all my guns anyway in a boating accident, the boat turned turtle and I lost every gun I have in 100 feet of murky swamp water.
Its awful.
If I am any more cynical, I'd say Cuomo wanted to drive a lot of regular law abiding New Yorkers to not comply.
One notes that the Ruger line of 10/22 .22LR rifles has a telescopic sight and a detachable magazine, making it an Assault Weapon. Sorry, kids.
Us`n Adirondack Mountain Boys will gladly register all our bullets here straight out of our guns.
JUST DO IT!
Become a part of NY history by registering your guns and have them confiscated later.
Line up sheep. The rail cars are waiting.
Anyone who obeys this law deserves the consequences.
I would never live in NY, but if I did, I would move out of the state before the required registration date.
Bye, Bye, Bye. Fascists.
Hello Freedom. Before they restrict crossing the border to the remaining Free America.
Interesting, I hadn’t heard that.
Very few Mass residents ‘hunt deer’, I guess ......
Any news source covering the long lines of gun owners flocking to register their weapons, in order to comply with the new law?
