The National Rifle Association will oppose the background check bill introduced by Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) and Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) Wednesday, the pro-Second Amendment group told the Free Beacon.
Manchin and Toomey held a press conference Wednesday morning announcing a bipartisan bill that would expand background checks for all commercial firearm sales, including gun shows and Internet sales.
The bill is the latest effort by the Senate to introduce background check legislation, after negotiations between Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) and Democrats broke down earlier this year.
Manchins office told BuzzFeed Wednesday that the senators had been talking with the NRA, but the Second Amendment group had thus far remained neutral.
The NRA has not said either way, Katie Longo, Manchins press secretary, told BuzzFeed. The senators have been talking to the NRA, but theyre still neutral.
A spokesman for the NRA said the report was wrong.
The NRA reiterated its opposition to expanded background checks in a statement to the Washington Free Beacon.
Expanding background checks at gun shows will not prevent the next shooting, will not solve violent crime and will not keep our kids safe in schools, the NRA said. While the overwhelming rejection of President Obama and Mayor Bloombergs universal background check agenda is a positive development, we have a broken mental health system that is not going to be fixed with more background checks at gun shows.
The sad truth is that no background check would have prevented the tragedy in Newtown, Aurora or Tucson, the NRAs statement continued. We need a serious and meaningful solution that addresses crime in cities like Chicago, addresses mental health deficiencies, while at the same time protecting the rights of those of us who are not a danger to anyone. President Obama should be as committed to dealing with the gang problem that is tormenting honest people in his hometown as he is to blaming law-abiding gun owners for the acts of psychopathic murderers.
I’m referring to the NRA.
Uh...So was I.
compared to other groups the nra is the 8000 lb gorilla in the room. they have the membership, the resources, and the money to take action.
multiply 4.5 million members by 10 means that many like minded REGISTERED VOTERS.
Good. Now it’s clear.
Agreed, this is what is important now and they need to be supported on this decision. We can deal with all of their other misteps on the side.
Under the Framers' intent, and the founding generation's understanding of the US Constitution, was the assumption that the rights guaranteed under the first ten amendments, were inherent in the people, that is, given by God, and not dependent nor granted by any government of men.
In that wise, they stand in superior position to the US Constitution and every law, statute, regulation, and ordinance of government. It then logically follows that our government does not have the authority to make any law appertaining to our God-given rights.
Every firearms related law on the books at this time, is in violation of this fundamental reality. Allowing Congress to implement more laws that attach to our God-given rights is simply a surrender of even more of our natural liberties.
It's fundamentally wrong, and can only lead to yet more laws and loss of our freedoms.
Apparently, it's the part about "shall not be infringed" that leftists have trouble understanding. Purposely, I might add.
It’s none of there damned business. We have a God-given, constitutionally guaranteed right to be armed. No permits, no checking, no government lists required (or permitted)!!
They want my gun, they’ll have to come and take it!!
NRA/ILA's goal should be to render NRA/ILA unnecessary. The very idea of gun control should be so toxic that no politician, of whatever party or political philosophy, would dare even think it.
>>I’m as distrustful of government as anyone, but I am not clear on what makes these background checks dangerous.
The background check is not dangerous. What is dangerous is the implementation. When a gun arrives at a dealer, it is logged in with a firearms record book, which is a legal document that must be maintained. They can see when it arrived and when it left the dealer’s hands.
Now, how do they keep track of YOUR gun to make sure that left your possession only after a proper background check?
Universal background checks requires universal registration. Registration leads to confiscation.
Also, how will you do a background check? Will you be able to call the same number as the FFL dealer and pay a small fee? Or will they require you and the buyer to go to a dealer so they can “process” your sale. The dealers around here charge about $150 to process a sale where they don’t make any money.
This is another “let’s pass it to see what’s in it” bill.
I do believe the NRA has felt the “impact” of bending over and grabbing it’s ankles.
As I have previously stated before, the 1st “shot” heard across the world will be in NY.
And we would be in MUCH worse shape now if it hadn’t been for them.
You just answered your own question. We don’t have to defend why background checks cause us harm. They have to defend how background checks would have prevented Newtown. All of this is in response to Newtown. What is their plan to “solve” it so it doesn’t happen again? I’m waiting. They have no plan. Its not even possible.
I want to see these liberals get down on their hands and knees and confess they are using this tragedy to implement their agenda. I want them to apologize and beg for forgiveness

I think you’re steps too late. Well before 2016 we need a candidate we can count on and coalesce around.
We can’t keep waiting for the perfect candidate or a conservative superman. Romney won in a crowded field because it was crowded.
I could tolerate a Rand presidency. I want someone who will start and lead the rollback. Between him and Congress I think we can do it.
I don’t see anyone else on the horizon that is serious about fundamental conservative issues. Get government out of our lives and a lot of stuff devolves back to the states. Instantly restoring liberty.
Federalism and restoring state power is the only way back from a national government.
...they’re opposed to Manchin and Toomey, but continue to back Harry Reid...
There are no "internet sales." All sales must be through an FFL. WTF?
Gun show sales already require a background check. WTF?
What is this about? It sounds like a drug-induced article from a Libtard.
They try to win pols from both parties over to our side, too. Doesn’t always work out as well as it should. Mostly because there are so many pols that know nothing about the issue. Thats the ones the NRA tries to sway. And, they try to stay single issue. If it was one sided with just Republicans supporting us, this bill would already have passed, most likely, Dems have the majority right now in the Senate.
I’m not sure you understand the NRA’s strategy, or how The Senate works, in reading your post....
