Rod Argent had been on the UK charts for years, but he hadn’t had an American hit since 1965. This came in at #3 this week.

A beautiful song - I like his rendering of his own work. Shortly before that, he wrote the songs on Richard Harris's debut album, "A Tramp Shining." I liked some of the songs on that album. Not so much, "MacArthur Park", but "Dancing Girl" and "A Tramp Shining."

The Fifth Dimension had recorded “Aquarius” from “Hair”, but the group decided that the song was too short and just didn’t work as a single. They then recorded “Let the Sunshine In” as a suffix to the song and released it that way. It came in at #2 this week.

The 5th Dimension: “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In”

I was a bit disappointed. In “Hair”, the song “The Flesh Failures” starts as a solo and morphs into a chorus (1:13). Then, when you least expect it, the chorus slips into “Let the Sunshine In” in 8-part harmony (2:30), and it’s one of the most overwhelming moments in an American musical, especially when you see it live. Some creative over-dubbing could have duplicated that effect. Here is the original for comparison.

Tommy Roe had started out seven years earlier as a Buddy Holly imitator. He had picked up a few hits in 1966, but now he had his biggest success, marking out his territory in the “bubble gum” genre. This came in at #1 this week.

And so we end one week of music history 44 years ago. See you tomorrow night! Cue the Rockumentary theme!
